Kindergarten Homework
Kindergartners should be read to each night for 20 minutes. This time spent with you is beneficial for your child to develop vocabulary, a love for reading and listening to stories.
Below are some ideas for book talk to engage in with your child while you are reading. Please do not feel you need to do this with every book!
1. Before reading the story, look at the cover and read the title. Ask your child what he/she/they think the book will be about, whom the characters might be and where the story might take place. By asking these questions you are helping to build prediction skills and activate prior knowledge about the story so he/she /they can make connections while listening.
2. During the story, stop and ask your child what he/she/they think will happen next. Again, this builds prediction skills but also helps you know if your child is comprehending the story.
3. After reading the story talk about it! By talking about the story, your child will be developing retelling skills and comprehension skills.
