Welcome to 3rd Grade!
September 2024
Welcome to third grade at Memorial Spaulding! I look forward to working with your children, and you, to make this an exciting year. Before school begins, I want to give you some information you may find helpful before the first day.
As we embark on a new school year, this can be a nervous time for all of us. You, your children, and I will navigate it together, try new things, learn from our mistakes, and do the best we can to make this a successful year.
START TIME - The first bell rings at 8:10. Please do not arrive much earlier than that as we do not want students gathering unsupervised. Morning meeting begins promptly at 8:20. It's important that your child is here on time so they can be settled and ready to start their day.
ARRIVAL- The start of a new year is the best time to be building that independence in your child. Please be sure they can get their gear off in the morning and will be able to unpack their backpack independently.
SNACK - Please send a nutritious snack. Popular choices are yogurt, fruits and vegetables, cheese and crackers, pretzels, and a drink. Please do not send peanut items for snacks, lunch is fine. We have late lunch and will be having snack in the morning.
FORGET SOMETHING? - If your child has forgotten anything at home and you are bringing it in, please ring the school bell and check in with Ms. Rutherford. She will then call our room and students will go down when they are free from their work. This helps to limit the number of distractions.
DISMISSAL - Dismissal will happen at the BACK DOOR by Clifton Path. Please be sure you completed the family form online. It is important for me to know where your child is going after school. It is also important for students to know which bus they will take home. Also, for the first few weeks of school, please speak with me directly at pick-up so I can check your child off on my dismissal checklist. This helps to keep the whole class safe during a very chaotic time at the beginning of the year. If there are any changes, please send a note in to be sure I receive it, as my email could be down or I could be absent.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday - 2:50 dismissal
Wednesday - 12:20 dismissal
HOMEWORK - will be updated soon
Nightly reading of at least 20 minutes is expected to be happening.
Students may have a math and reading practice activity as well.
RECESS - During the school year, we go out for recess as often as we can. We still go out for recess in the winter months if weather permits. Please keep in mind that unless it is bitterly cold, we still go out. Please dress your child appropriately for the colder months, including hats and gloves. Also, send in snow pants and boots that they can put on themselves. If you send your child in with boots, please send sneakers on Physical Education days. Additionally, having an extra set of clothes in case they need to change during the day, would be very helpful.
SUPPLIES - Teachers have gathered supplies needed for this year. Your child will need small headphones to use with Chromebooks.
BIRTHDAYS - Birthdays are an important time in your child's life. If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday in school, please remember that we do not celebrate important days with food due to the numerous allergies in schools. Instead of sending in food, why not read a book to the class? This is a great opportunity to celebrate your child's birthday by being part of their day and making them feel special! Please contact me to set up a time!
As the summer comes to a close, please continue to encourage your child to read nightly or listen to you read. Also, practicing addition and subtraction facts will help them in math. Sit down and try to write about what you've been doing all summer to help your child with their writing and get ideas flowing.
On the first day of school, please send a water bottle, a snack, and lunch or your child may choose the school lunch (the first lunch is free, a second lunch can be purchased).
