Please have your child read fiction and nonfiction books at his/her English level. In addition, please read to your child in English. These books can be at a slightly higher level. Your child may take books out at the Mason Rice Library and at the Newton Public Free Library. Talk about what you read with your child. Language is communication.
In addition, we recommend that your child listen to music, watch educational shows, and visit parks, museums, stores, and community events to improve his/her English listening and speaking skills. This way your child will hear the sounds and structures of English frequently.
Here are some online games and resources for kids to practice English:
BBC LIteracy : Online games to practice phonics and reading
Starfall : ABCs, Early Reading, Math games and stories
Mindsnacks : English vocabulary, multiple language practice
Colorin Colorado! Educational resources for bilingual families
Here are more online resources for English practice on the ELL Newton Public Schools Website
Finally, we encourage you to continue teaching your child how to read and write in your native language! Studies show that reading and writing in two languages supports success in both languages. The skills transfer from one language to another, and as you know, there are many benefits to being bilingual!
