During Kindergarten screening students who may require ELL services are identified. In September, the ELL department assess those students to determine eligibility for the program. Families of students who are enrolled will receive a letter from the ELL Department.
All English language learners are required by law to take the ACCESS test, which is administered in January. The ACCESS tests students' English language proficiency in all four language domains: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Scores are made available to parents and teachers in the spring.
The MCAS test is required by law for all students in grades 3-12. It is a test that aims to measure students' abilities according to the Common Core Standards in math and English. ELLs in their first year of school in the United States are exempt from the ELA (English Language Arts) section of the test; if they take it, their scores will not be counted. All ELLs in grades 3-5 are required to take the Math test; students in grade 5 also take the Science and Technology/Engineering test.
