Of all the unwelcome insects that invade our homes and businesses, few creatures are as reviled as the cockroach. Not only do they appear repulsive, but cockroaches invoke fear, disgust, and anxiety unrivaled by any other insect. While some bugs might get an unfair reputation, the cockroach deserves its bad image and then some. Let's go ahead and look over why.
The Rap Sheet
Omnivorous and Voracious Eaters: Cockroaches will eat almost anything, including grass, cork, hair, paper, and glue just to name a few.
Aggressive Behavior: Some species are known to bite.
Filthy Excrement: They leave behind droppings wherever they go.
Pungent Odor: As an infestation grows, it gives off a strong, unpleasant smell that can permeate your home.
Rapid Reproduction: They reproduce quickly and in large numbers.
Contamination: Cockroaches ruin food supplies and damage other belongings, including furniture, books, and electronics.
Health Risks: They transmit several serious diseases, including typhoid, salmonella, E. coli, dysentery, plague, and cholera. Cockroaches can also cause respiratory problems such as asthma and allergic reactions.
Signs Of A Roach Infestation
Often, the first few cockroaches that enter your home will remain unseen for a while. It’s a common misconception that only dirty homes attract them; they will target clean, tidy spaces just as readily. Many infestations start with a single cockroach hitching a ride into your home on bags, boxes, clothing, or luggage. Cockroaches are clever, nocturnal, and adept at hiding in walls, flooring, furniture, and other dark, out-of-the-way areas. Many homeowners don’t realize they have a problem until they spot one during the day, at which point the infestation may be substantial.
Here are some early warning signs to look for:
Check along countertops and around sinks for their droppings, which resemble tiny black sprinkles.
Look for shed exoskeletons in these areas.
Be alert to unusual odors. They emit a chemical called cuticular hydrocarbon with a musty or oily smell, intensifying as the infestation grows.
The Cockroaches of Oklahoma
Oklahoma is home to multiple species of cockroaches, but the two most problematic are the German and American cockroaches. The German cockroach is domestic, thriving indoors, while the American cockroach is peridomestic, meaning it will enter homes if the exterior becomes inhospitable. Both species thrive in Oklahoma’s climate and behave similarly. The German cockroach is smaller, about half an inch long, and typically tan with dark parallel streaks on its back. In contrast, the American cockroach can grow up to two inches and is reddish-brown with yellow edges around the thorax.
Regardless of the species, dealing with cockroaches is a serious issue. They are incredibly resilient and adaptable; some scientists believe they could survive a global nuclear apocalypse. While that may be an exaggeration, they have a higher radiation tolerance than humans. Additionally, they have evolved to gain immunity to many pesticides, so DIY efforts are usually ineffective. If you have a roach problem, you need a professional experienced in cockroach control. It is the only truly effective way to eliminate an infestation.
