New Students Checklist

Congratulations! You have applied to our program and received an acceptance letter. 

Here are the next steps for you to take before you can start the semester!

Step 1: Submit Enrollment Confirmation

If you plan to enroll in the ESL+ Certificate Program, please complete the Enrollment Confirmation Form as soon as possible to secure your spot. Your N-number can be found in the Acceptance Letter. If you don't plan to enroll, please let us know as soon as possible at ELSC@newschool.edu.

Step 2: English Level Placement

ESL+ Design

For students who had not applied to Parsons before: After you submitted your application to ESL+, Jeremy Scott, the Exam Coordinator, will contact you to schedule your placement exam. This can take up to a week after your application has been processed, so please be patient. 

For students who had applied to Parsons and submitted DET/Duolingo scores: you will not need to take another placement exam. You will be notified of your English level placement in the decision letter issued by Center for English Language Studies.

For students  who had applied to Parsons and submitted other non-DET scores such as TOEFL and IELTS: After you submitted your application to ESL+, Jeremy Scott, the Exam Coordinator, will contact you to schedule your placement exam. This can take up to a week after your application has been processed, so please be patient. 

ESL+ Music

Since you have already taken a placement exam as part of your Mannes application, you do not need to take another placement exam after applying to ESL+ Music. You will be notified of your English level placement in the decision letter issued by the Center for English Language Studies. If you are tested into level 3, you will need 2 semesters of ESL+ Music. If you are tested into level 4, you will need 1 semester of ESL+ Music. 

ESL+ University Preparations

After you submitted your application to ESL+, Jeremy Scott, the Exam Coordinator, will contact you to schedule your placement exam. This can take up to a week after your application has been processed, so please be patient. 

Step 3: Register and Pay for Classes

Step 4: Health Insurance Waiver (Fall and Spring entry only)

If you DO NOT need New School Health Insurance,  please submit this form by the deadline listed on the form. (it is typically 2 weeks after start of classes). You will need proof of your personal health insurance in order to waive the New School Health Insurance. You will receive a full refund.

Step 5: Find Your NetID and Access Canvas and New School Email

ESL+ Design

For students who had applied to Parsons and been referred to the Center for English Language Studies in their Parsons decision letters: You will be able to access your NetID as soon as you received an acceptance letter from the Center for Language Studies. Follow the instructions below to find your NetID.

For students who had not applied to Parsons before: Once you complete registration and payment, you will be assigned a netID that you will use to access The New School's resources. Follow the instructions below to find your NetID.

To find your NetID, follow the following steps:

IMPORTANT: You may have to wait up to 24 hours for the system process your registration and assign you a NetID. If you still cannot locate your NetID and access my.newschool.edu after a day, please contact elsc@newschool.edu with a copy of your registration confirmation.

It is important that you set up your NetID and be familiar with your MyNewSchool, Canvas, and Email accounts prior to the Welcome Workshop. 

ESL+ Music

Since you are an ESL+ Music student, you will be able to access your NetID as soon as you received an acceptance letter from the Center for Language Studies.

Step 6: Apply for your Visa

Students who plan to study in the U.S and are not U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents (green card holders) must apply for the I- 20 for the F-1 student visa.

ESL+ Design

For ALL ESL+ Design students: Please be sure to read the iGlobal I-20 Application Guide before starting your application. Applying for a student visa can take several weeks, and some U.S. consulates require security checks that take many weeks. Once you are issued the I-20 or DS-2019 from ISSS you can apply for a student visa at your local U.S Embassy.  If you have any questions, please consult the ISSS website or contact International Student and Scholar Services at iss@newschool.edu  or 212-229-5592.  You can also consider attending the International Students Services office's ongoing live-advising sessions online; sign up here

Step 7: Apply for Housing 

There is limited housing available. Apply for housing as soon as possible after registering for your classes. 

For Fall and Spring, apply via the housing portal on the Housing website. 

For Summer, follow the instructions on the this page.

Step 8: Sign the Required Forms

Sign the required forms before you begin classes. 

Step 9: RSVP to the Welcome Workshop and Mark Your Calendars

The Welcome Workshop is the mandatory orientation program for all new ESL+ students.  The Welcome Workshop is always scheduled in the week before classes start. Times and location to be confirmed. Please RSVP on this form

Step 10: Submit Immunization Records 

Before you start your classes on campus, you MUST submit approved immunization records to Student Health Services.  Students can submit their immunization records and exemption requests by logging in to the SHS portal. More information on immunization policy can be found on the Student Health Services website. 

Step 11: Getting your ID card 

When you arrive in NYC, you will need to get your New School ID card to access campus facilities. Submit your photo here as soon as possible to avoid delays. When you arrive on campus, visit Campus Card Services at 39 W 13th St, 2nd floor New York, NY 10011 to pick up your ID card. If you have any questions about your ID card, please contact newcard@newschool.edu or call 646.909.4472.

Step 12: Review the Student Manual

Please review the Student Manual for important academic policies and expectations. 

Step 13: Attend the Welcome Workshop and Begin Your Semester!

Attend the mandatory orientation, the Welcome Workshop, and get ready to begin your semester!
