The New School has one of the highest percentages of international students among U.S. universities. The Language Support (LS) Initiative is a university-wide professional development model that equips faculty to effectively teach an increasingly international, diverse student body, differentiating The New School as a leader of global education.

Through our courses and workshops, faculty learn to apply the best practices and pedagogy of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language) and UDL (Universal Design for Learning) to their specific discipline and courses. These training opportunities are provided by the Center for English Language Support and Services in partnership with The New School’s Faculty Center for Innovation, Collaboration and Support. The Initiative was awarded the New School Provost’s IEF (Innovations in Education Fund) grant in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

To date, more than 275 faculty from across the university have taken advantage of our Language Support offerings and unanimously report that these have improved their teaching across the board with all populations.

The digital Language Support Trained badge is provided to New School faculty to certify that they have completed the 33-hour TESOL Methods Intensive for New School Faculty or more substantial training such as the 132 hour non-credit Certificate in TESOL. Read more here.

COURSES AND WORKSHOPS FOR FACULTY

The TESOL Methods Intensive for Faculty includes five sessions that explore pedagogical techniques and best practices for teaching international and multilingual learners in both onsite and online environments. Classes cover syllabus development, lesson planning, and practical strategies that can be used to support diverse students across disciplines and in a variety of class types. You’ll be able to share your experiences in a supportive environment with other New School faculty. Details about the Intensive are available here. The training also counts towards the Certificate in Teaching English , which you can learn more about here.

The TESOL Methods Toolkit is an intensive weekend workshop focused on best practices for teaching non-native speakers. The course will equip you with techniques, ideas and resources to support classrooms with both non-native and native speakers. These strategies are designed to elicit the richest classroom experience possible for all. This training is offered for faculty who cannot commit to the longer 5- day TESOL Methods Intensive offered in January and June.

A course in the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CTE). It is open to the public and addresses a wide variety of contexts (while the January Intensive focuses on supporting students in a university context), but NS faculty have also enrolled in this version when the intensive format was not possible for them. As NS faculty, you may use your regular New School course to fulfill the teaching requirement. You can take this course on a tuition waiver.

NELT 0411 A | 15 sessions | Wednesdays evenings | every fall and spring term. Online or Onsite TBD.

Faculty who have completed one of the above trainings may want to take more courses towards the Certificate. The TESOL Methods Intensive counts as the Methods and Techniques course in the Certificate. There are four additional courses that faculty may take using tuition waivers:

· English Grammar for ESL Teachers

· Teaching the Sounds System of English

· Assessment in the Language Classroom

· The Teaching Practicum

The Resource Site is a repository for lesson plans, teaching resources, and professional development opportunities by and for faculty across the university. Methods Intensive students are encouraged to submit final lesson plan assignments to the site resulting in a constant refreshment of resources. The site is a showcase of the inclusive teaching practice of our creative and reflective faculty. To protect the intellectual property of those who contribute their lesson plans, the site is accessible only to faculty.
