Color guards (also known as flag corps) are teams of performers who perform choreographed dances and routines with various equipment to enhance and interpret the music of the marching band show. Color guard teams can be found in American colleges, universities, high schools, and middle schools. They use various equipment including flags, batons, pom-poms, non-functioning rifles, and sabres, along with other props. Color guard groups are mixed gender and can appeal to a wide range of interests.
The group would attend an auxiliary camp in the summer (alongside band camp) to learn their routine. During the fall season, the team would travel with the marching band and perform with the marching band in all performances, parades, and festivals. The team would also be included in all marching band trips, including our annual trip to Cedar Point.
One more great thing about being in color guard is that students can still participate in ANY other concurrent sport. Currently, members of the marching band and color guard also participate in volleyball, golf, and cross country during the fall season.
The New Riegel Color Guard team is open to any student in grade 7-12. Any student who enjoys dancing, choreography, music, or performing arts might also enjoy color guard. Any student who has some experience in baton twirling or wants to learn how to twirl flags or batons will especially find enjoyment from the group.
The team might also be a great opportunity for students who want to experience the fun and excitement of marching band performances, events, trips, and parades even if they do not play an instrument.
