Middle School Learning Targets
By the end of the 8th grade:
§ The student will be able to explain important long-term benefits of regular exercise.
§ The student will understand the importance of their role in a team setting and how to behave appropriately.
§ The student will be able to identify and define the 5 Health-Related Fitness Components.
§ The student will be able to perform an activity and determine which Health-Related Fitness Component they are targeting.
§ The student will be able to explain the different characteristics of aerobic and anaerobic exercise.
§ The student will be able to identify certain workout intensity and determine if it is aerobic or anaerobic.
§ The student will be able to identify and explain different ways to monitor their heart rate.
§ The student will learn how to monitor their heart rate while participating in physical activities.
§ The student will be able to locate their pulse by using Carotid and Radial arterial palpation.
§ The student will know the basic characteristics associated with the heart rate zones.
§ The students will be able to identify how certain activities effect exercise intensity.
The NASPE standards and learning targets stated above will be fulfilled through the units provided on the following page. The units are divided by individual grade levels and our three focus areas: Healthy Heart, Team Power, and Life Adventures.
Three Focus Areas:
The Healthy Heart focus area develops knowledge and skills for a health enhancing level of fitness and regular fitness habits of physical activity.
The Team Power focus area develops the ability for students to compete and cooperate together to achieve a common goal.
The Life Adventures focus area develops lifelong recreational and leisure skills.
§ All students in grades 6th – 8th will be required to complete the Fitnessgram physical fitness testing twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. The Fitnessgram is based tests only the 5 Health-Related Fitness Components.
