Radial symmetry is when the design goes around a center point, or an 'axis'. Follow the pictures below for help getting started. Send in a picture!
Lots of things in nature have radial symmetry
Some flowers have radial symmetry.
Mandalas are a form of Buddhist art that uses radial symmetry. Some are made using colored sand.
Step One: Let's make a design using radial symmetry! Start with a square paper. All sides of a square are the same length.
Step Two: Fold it in half, and then in half again
Step 3: Open it up and flatten it out, put a dot in the center where the fold line cross.
Step 4: Use a ruler to draw along the fold lines, and you can even draw lines that go from from corner to corner. Use these lines as guides.
Step 5: Use a pencil and draw lines and shapes along and inbetwen the fold lines.
Step 5: Use a black thin tipped marker (or a dark crayon or colored pencil) to go over your radial symmetry design pencil lines.
Step 6: Color it in or paint it! (Try it as a wax resist with a crayon and watercolor).
You can even make radial symmetry outside with natural materials. Or even with objects inside your home!
