After the Apocalypse

Poem - by Colleen Anderson

The day came when the balance shifted

The ghosts outnumbered those of flesh

You walked through malls and streets

You stopped in cafeterias but all seats were taken

Spectres talking, no space left for the living

You looked around, crying out

Is anyone there

Is anyone there

Is anyone there

The dead ignored you as you always had them

You touched yourself, looked down at your feet

Jumped up and down, trying to believe your reality

It slipped, it wavered as you searched for life

So very few remained, they fled like ghosts

You never went hungry, there was always food

And booze, always booze

You searched on, crying out from time to time

Is anyone there

Is anyone there

Is anyone there

So rare, you often thought you imagined it

A shade looked up, body transparent

Eyes that showed the walls behind

Turned to you, frowned

You cherished these moments

That you were seen

That made you feel alive
