From Officer Jerry Brown – Smart Security
*Note from Mo – Jerry is a war veteran and does not spook easily (pun intended).
3-23-20
At around 5:15am I was on the 2nd floor of Sacred Heart and I thought I heard a TV or radio playing as I passed one of the rooms. I took a step back and turned my head to see if I could hear it better and saw a shadow move across the hall but could no longer hear the voices.
3-25-20
When I came on duty (11:30pm) all of the lights in McNeil were turned on. At around 3:00am I was doing my rounds and noticed that the lights on the third floor had been turned off so I entered the building and turned them back on. Later in the morning, at 5:00am, I noticed that the lights on the third floor were off again. I did not enter the building after that.
3-26-20
At around 5:30am I entered Sacred Heart through the west door closest to the security office. I proceeded to walk down the hallway and turn on all of the lights until I reached the Living Room. I was listening to the song Strife by Trivium as loud as my phone would play when I heard what sounded at first like someone singing a high pitch note for a few seconds then turned into a blood-curdling scream. Being freaked out I turned around and ran out of the building as fast as I could. The screaming continued until I left the building. Once outside I could hear it no more.
*Note on this one, Jerry refused to go back into the building that morning and I had to unlock the rest of the doors. He believes the music he was listening to angered something in the building.
On Thursday 4-16-20 at around 5:30AM I was on the first floor of Sacred Heart waiting for the elevator when I heard a girl's voice come from around the corner in the hallway, possibly near where the Cardinal Newman Room is located. I couldn't tell what the voice said, but I could tell it was a female's voice and it said 3-4 words. There was no one else in the building.
On Monday 4-20-20 at 5:55AM I was on the third floor of Sacred Heart at the top of the north stairs just outside of the Runway Learning Center when I heard a door shut somewhere on the second floor. The door sounded like an old wooden door with glass in it because you could hear the glass rattle when it closed. When I checked the second floor and the first floor there was no one else in the building.
On Tuesday 4-21-20 at 6:40AM I was near the top of the stairs on the 2nd floor of Sacred Heart by the Student Accounts Office when I heard a girl's voice say either, "Oh, cool" or "A school". I couldn't tell which but the voice came from just around the corner from where I was standing and there was no one else in the building at the time.
May 6, 2020 6:20am – I was in the 3rd floor men’s restroom in Sacred Heart and had just finished my business when the lights went out. I have worked here for over five years and have never known those lights to ever go out; they are constantly on. There is no light switch and they are not motion activated. They were out approximately 10 seconds when I said out loud, “Okay, that’s interesting”, and they came back on.
*It has been pointed out to me that there is actually an old motion sensor in the third floor men’s restroom. Funny thing still, I was moving when the light went out and standing still when it came back on. Ghosties???
May 8, 2020 5:45am - As I was walking on the 2nd floor of Sacred Heart by the "Fishbowl", I heard a door open and shut in front of me. There was no one else in the building. I finished walking the 2nd floor and took the south stairway down to the first floor. As I reached the bottom of the stairs I heard footsteps going up the stairs between the 2nd and 3rd floors. I looked up the stairwell but there was no one there.
May 21, 2020 6:15am - I was on the 2nd floor of Sacred Heart next to the Bookstore display and heard 4-5 footsteps going up the stairs next to me from the 2nd to the 3rd floor. No one else was in the building at the time.
June 4, 2020 6:40am - I was walking down the north stairway of Sacred Heart from the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor and I heard someone moving around below me on the 2nd floor. It sounded like someone was moving something that was draped in plastic like a large amount of clothing from the dry cleaners. When I got to the 2nd floor there was no one there. I then walked down to the south end of the 2nd floor hallway (Father Adam was in the chapel praying) and when I got to the end of the hallway I heard someone behind me. The sound was so clear and distinct that I turned around to see who was behind me. There was no one there.
June 11, 2020 5:55am - I was at the top of the stairs on the 2nd floor of Sacred Heart just outside of the Student Accounts/Registrar's Office and heard a very loud scraping sound like someone was moving a metal filing cabinet across a cement floor. The noise came from down at the bottom of the stairs. When I heard it I immediately looked down but saw no one; there was not even an object that could be moved to make that sound in the area. Of course, the building was empty.
June 12, 2020 6:25am - I had just walked down the north staircase of Sacred Heart from the third floor to the second when I heard three to four distinct footsteps coming from the bottom of the stairs on the first floor. It sounded like hard-soled shoes walking around. I expected to see Father Adam at the north door when I looked down, but there was no one there. I was so sure of the noise I went down to the area of the Golf Room to see if it was a golfer or if someone had just wandered into the building. There was no one there. I finished walking the building and there was no one else in there at the time.
This was a report filed by Officer Nathaniel Firestine of Smart Security:
Around 10:35AM, 6/13/2020, I went to check the dehumidifier in the Archives Room at Sacred Heart. I entered the hallway and was making my way to the room I heard what sounded like a heavy wood chair moving and grinding across the floor above me. The sound lasted about 5 seconds and I know no one was in the building with me at this time so I went directly upstairs to verify what the sound was. Finding nobody present on the 2nd floor I made my way back to the Archive Room. At the very moment I touched the door handle I heard a door swing open sounding like an old barn door, and immediately after a ball bouncing hard in the hall. I attempted to ignore it as I fumbled with my keys to unlock the door and the noise suddenly stopped at the top of the stairs above me.
I did not hear footsteps, people or talking. The building was in total silence. After about 10 seconds I felt a presence as if someone was in the building; not around me but in the building. I finished up with the dehumidifier and locked the door behind me. I wondered what was going on upstairs so I checked all floors but to the best of my knowledge there was no one else inside.
Do you know the feeling you get when you touch a piece of metal and you get a slight shock from static? Well, that was the worst part about all of this! Shortly after checking through the building I made my way down the Mail & Copy Room hallway to leave the building when suddenly I heard growling directly behind me as if I was being followed by a small dog. Right after that I heard a hiss like a snake and I began feeling vibrations and static on every part of my body! As I tried to ignore it and continue walking down the hall toward the exit the goose bumps and the feeling of being wrapped in a cold blanket began to be too much. After exiting the building the feeling faded away in about 5 seconds.
On 7-31-20 at around 6:15AM I was walking on the 2nd floor of Sacred Heart. Just before I passed by the Heritage Room, walking south in the hallway, I could hear voices down the hall in front of me. I stopped to listen but heard nothing more. After taking four or five steps I again heard voices coming from down the hallway and once again stopped. After hearing nothing I took another four or five steps and heard the voices again. It sounded like they were coming from around the corner past the President's Office. There was no one else in the building besides me. I continued my walk-thru but heard nothing else.
Icer Vaughan, the IT Director, was sitting in his office located on the first floor of Sacred Heart at approximately 2:40pm on 8-5-20 when a computer that had been turned off suddenly turned on. The computer was completely shut down and would have required someone pushing and holding the power button to accomplish this. This is the first time something like this has ever happened in his office. To be fair, even though the computer was shut down it was still plugged in.
On 8-26-20 at 6:05AM I had just started walking down the long north/south 3rd floor hallway in Sacred Heart. My 3rd shift officer unlocks the classroom doors and opens them out into the hallway. Each morning I walk the hallway, check to make sure the doors are unlocked, then close them. This morning as I grabbed the first door there was the very clear sound of a girl laughing coming from inside of the room, but there was no one inside of the room or in the building except me. So was the ghostie laughing at me or with me???
Thursday 10-15-20 at around 5:45AM I was walking on the 2nd floor of Eck (never had anything happen in here before). I was next to the roll down door where the admin assistant sits when I heard many footsteps running up behind me. These footsteps were so distinct I spun around to see who was in the building before it was unlocked - there was no one there. The footsteps sounded like someone running down the hallway from Gerber towards me.
Thursday 10-22-20 at around 6:15AM I was again on the 2nd floor of Eck at the top of the main stairway and heard what was either singing or someone calling the same 2-syllable name over and over. I heard this voice several times and immediately went downstairs. Just before I got to the bottom of the stairs the voice stopped. I checked all over the building but there was no one else there.
To add to all of this, my regular 3rd shift officer said that on Tuesday 10-13-20 around 3AM he saw the lights in the Cadaver Lab in Gerber go on, then turn off a little while later. The cleaning crew had already left the building. I can't remember if those are motion lights or not, but if not then someone - or something - had to flip a switch. It's gearing up to be a fun Halloween.
Time to Go
At the end of September 2022 Myra Pfannenstiel, the Director of Financial Aid, was working after 5pm on a weeknight in her office on the 2nd floor of Sacred Heart Hall (in the Student Accounts area). As Myra was working she felt a rush of wind blow across her desk in front of her. There are no vents capable of producing that wind, nor fans running. Myra dismissed it and continued working. Several minutes later Myra heard a male's voice say, "Get out! Leave!" Myra stopped working for a minute but dismissed the voice and continued on with her work. A few minutes later the same voice again said, "Leave! Get out!" That was enough for Myra. She grabbed her things and quickly left by the back stairs.
Outdoor Ghostie
On 11-29-22 I was on campus very early in the morning in order to hide pickle ornaments for a contest I was holding for the students. It was 4:30am and I was on the east side of Sacred Heart Hall having just hung one of the ornaments on a bush when I looked towards the northern end of the building. In my flashlight beam I saw the figure of a man walking straight towards the building. This "man" was an adult, around 6' tall and was all one color (sepia) including his clothes. As I watched, the man walked into the bushes/building. I hurried over to where I had seen the man, this taking no more than 5 seconds, thinking it was probably a homeless individual but there was no noise of footsteps in the dry leaves, no sign of bushes being parted by someone walking through them, and no sign of anyone in or behind the bushes. I spent several minutes searching the bushes but saw no evidence of anyone having been there. There is no doubt in my mind that what I saw was a man, but it appears it was not a living person.
Squeakin' in the Gym
At the end of September 2022, sorry but I can't remember which day, I was walking through Gorges Atrium early in the morning. There was no one else in the building and all of the gym lights were out. I could plainly hear the 'squeak' and 'chirp' of many tennis shoes on the gym floor like the basketball team was doing drills. I quickly went over to look inside of the gym and as I got a few feet from the door the sounds stopped. There was no one inside of the gym.
Who is it?
On the morning of January 19, 2023 I walked up the stairs to the 2nd floor of Dugan Library. The hallways were dark as none of the 2nd story lights had been turned on. I walked down one hallway and as I rounded the corner where the main doors into the Alumni Center are I clearly heard a woman's voice say, "I'm here". I quickly looked around, in every room, and down the other hallway, but there was no one in the building.
Ghosties on the Move
On March 31, 2023, at 5:15am I was unlocking doors and turning on lights on the 2nd floor of Sacred Heart Hall when I heard the sound of heavy wooden items being dragged across tile floor coming from the 3rd floor. Problem: there are no heavy wooden items on the 3rd floor, and there is no tile flooring, plus I was the only one in the building.
High Steppin' Ghostie
It's May 9th and not once, but twice at 6am I heard distinct footsteps on the floor and stairway of the north stairs in Sacred Heart. In case you're wondering, I was the only one in the building. This is not the first time I've heard footsteps here.
A Ghostie Double-Whammy
Saturday evening, May 27, 2023 I escorted a group of paranormal investigators around Sacred Heart Hall and McNeil to see what they could find out. While in McNeil Hall at around 9:30pm the group was on the 3rd floor and I needed to go get a key out of the key box on the first floor. I went down to the west end of the first floor and as I approached the Custodial Closet I hit an extremely cold mass of air that gave me goose bumps. I opened the door to the custodial closet, turned on the light, stepped inside and some papers thumb-tacked to the wooden shelf fluttered like a gust of wind hit them, but there was no source for the wind to be found. Creepy. Next, while in room 301 (The Runway Learning Center) at around 11:30pm a couple of the investigators said they saw a silhouette in the back right-side office, but when I looked it was gone. Around 11:45pm I was sitting and waiting for them to finish up in another part of the learning center when I saw a black figure walk from right to left in the left-side office. I jumped up and ran to the office door and looked in but there was no one there.
Team Ghostie
Around 5:15am on June 21, 2023, I walked into Gorges Atrium and clearly heard the sound of basketballs bouncing and the squeak of tennis shoes on the gym floor. When I turned to look to see who was playing ball the lights were off in the gym and there was no one in the gym. Team Ghostie must have had an early practice...
Breakfast for One, Please
At 5:20am on July 17th I was out in front of my office feeding the campus cats. I always put their bowls of food on the picnic tables to keep the ants out of them. As I turned to go back to my office I looked into the front area of the cafeteria (where there were some lights on) I clearly saw a black shadow "person" walk from left to right across the serving area. I immediately went in the cafeteria and there was no one inside. I had heard from past employees and some security officers about seeing shadows move around inside of that building but I had never seen one until now.
