Farm to School
Our Localvore Journey
For the past seven years NewBrook has been growing their farm to school program. Several years ago we constructed raised bed "teaching gardens" in the school yard that are used both during the school year and during the summer camp programs. We are happy to be in our sixth year of a school lunch program that brings local foods to the cafeteria tables for breakfast and lunch. We also were the recipients of a sizable farm to school grant last year and have been working hard to design and implement lots of exciting new programs with this added resource. As if that weren't enough, we also received another grant last year to purchase and install a salad bar in our school cafeteria space. Students will now be given many more fresh, local options of fruits and veggies with each meal at school.
Meet Chef Chris; our pioneer and fearless food-ninja! Chris joined us at NewBrook in 2017 and has been taking the food program by storm ever since. He has managed to add tons more local, fresh foods into the menu (including a daily salad bar option) and now offers both breakfast and lunch free of charge for all NewBrook students. Go, Chris!
