Within the New Bedford Public Schools, we believe students need to learn social and emotional skills the same way that they learn behavioral skills and academic content: through explicit instruction and practice, with opportunities to receive growth producing feedback. A Multi-Tiered System of Supports includes the teaching social emotional skills, integrated with behavioral and academic learning. A variety of approaches are used across all school levels to explicitly teach students the 5 essential components of social emotional learning (SEL) outlined in the CASEL Framework.
