Modules/Reading
(May 8th - May 18th)
We are in the last unit of Module 4. In Unit 3, scholars become advocates for birds, as they gather information and read texts about bird problems. This module's question, "Why should we care about birds?" is still in full effect, as scholars use all their background knowledge to research and identify reasons the author in the text provides to support their point that birds help humans, animals, and plants. This unit's guiding question is "How can people care for birds so they can live and grow?".

Recommended Practice:
Complete the following activities with your scholar to practice/review:
Bird Adjectives
Have your scholar review the chart
They are choosing an adjective that will guide their informative paragraph on Monday.
Read Aloud
Have your scholar reread A Place for Birds.
Prompt your scholar to look for situations within the book that connect to their adjective.
Scientific Drawing of a Local Bird
Have your scholar choose and accurately draw one of the local birds for their Feathered Friend Saver. (Criteria for drawing is below)
If they are satisfied with their drawing, they are able to bring it in to be a step ahead.
Feathered Friend Saver:
The final assignment for this module, and 1st grade, is a Feathered Friend Saver. This ia a 2 part assignment. Scholar's will be tasked with writing (and typing!) an informative paragraph centered around an adjective they choose to describe birds. Within that paragraph, scholar's will need to have a heading, focus statement, provide evidence with some elaboration, and a sense of closure. After completion of their paragraph, scholar's will create a scientific drawing of a local bird, in efforts of making a window marker to prevent birds from crashing into windows.
Below is an example of what's expected to be included in their paragraph.
