What did you do in Art?
Artists created artwork inspired by African American artist, Alma Woodsey Thomas. Artists were able to discuss and analyze her artistic work, review the colors of the rainbow, and use materials of their choice.

WHO INSPIRED US?
Alma Woodsey Thomas
Alma Woodsey Thomas developed her signature style—large, abstract paintings filled with irregular patterns of bright colors—in her 70s.
She became the first African American woman to hold a fine arts degree after graduating from Howard University.
After working in art education for 35 years she retired from teaching and was able to concentrate on art full-time. She developed her style of painting and went on to become the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art. We learned from Alma Thomas that is never too late to follow your dreams and discover your talent!

The artists in 1st grade observed the blue similar to the kindergarten artists but thought the warm colors were fire from a rocket ship after analyzing the name of the painting.

Start with red, continue on in a rainbow patterned (or create a new pattern)
Draw the outline of rectangles, squares, OR circles around all 4 edges of your paper (top, bottom, side to side)
Fill in each shape as you go
