English 105: Composition I is the first part of a two-part sequence of introductory courses designed to develop college-level writing and reading skills. ENG 105 focuses on increasing your written fluency—your ability to use the writing process as a means of discovering ideas, to see revision as a necessary and recursive part of the writing process, to see good writing as dependent on its context, and to create relationships between reading and writing. 

ENG 105 is a prerequisite to ENG 106: Composition II. Most first-year students enroll in ENG 105 during their first term at the university.

Students who are exempt from ENG 105 may enroll directly in ENG 106.  You are exempt from ENG 105 if you:

• Completed ENG 105: Composition I or transfer equivalent at another university, or 

• Earned a qualifying score on one of the following tests:

  • An ACT composite score of 29 or higher; 

  • An SAT score of 1900 or higher; 

  • An SAT evidence-based Reading and Writing sub-score of 580 or higher; or

  • AP Language score of 3 or higher.
