Ready, set, read! We are thrilled to once again host our in-person Book Fair, as well as our 12-day Read-A-Thon.
(We are proud to announce that we are partnering, once again, with fork + pencil.)
Monday, June 1 to Friday, June 12
Between Monday, June 1 and Friday, June 12, our goal is for the entire school to read a total of 100,000 minutes, as well as raise $10,000! This is a fun school-wide event, as we will spend nearly 2 weeks celebrating reading — while raising money for our school! All profits will go directly to the PTA, which helps funds everything from photocopy machines and air conditioners to literacy and math curricula, dance residencies, chess instruction, sports programs, club advisors, tutoring, drama and visual arts programs ... and more!
How it works: Ask family, friends, and neighbors to sponsor you (or your child) for 5, 10, or 15 cents for each minute you read outside of class time between Monday, June 1 and Friday, June 12. Your sponsors may also donate a flat amount. By registering here, you can set up an easy Read-A-Thon page for yourself and your donors. There will be raffle prizes for participants! The more minutes you read, the more raffle tickets you earn.
When it comes to improving reading skills to ensure academic success, did you know?:
Reading for as little as 20 minutes a day improves children’s vocabulary and grammar.
Reading a variety of books also provides students with exposure to different writing styles. This nourishes their creativity and helps them to become more confident writers at any age.
The best way to improve reading skills is (you guessed it!) to read daily. Challenge yourself by reading a book outside of your comfort zone, whether that means the vocabulary is new and exciting or you pick up nonfiction in place of a novel!
