Technology UPDATE

Information on changes occurring with Middle School student devices for the

Fall of 17/18 School Year

DEVICE REPLACMENT YEAR 21-22

As we wrap up end of year and the return of iPads from students in 5 through 7^th grade students, we will be changing the technology for incoming students in 5^th and 8^th grade. Incoming 5^th and 8^th grade students for the 17/18 School Year will receive new Dell Chromebooks.

Students entering 6^th and 7^th grade entering the school year 17/18 will keep their existing iPads. The following years students will eventually receive Chromebooks as well.

The district believes the change in device will allow students to learn on different platforms and allow for diversity in the use of technology.

With this change we want to make sure that you as the parent, will need to know what to expect with the change in this device, and resources to help your child at home with the Chromebook.

The Chromebook is an internet device built on the Google platform and will bring different ways of achieving class room assignments and delivery to the teacher.

Students will continue to use Canvas as the primary means getting their assignments and completing projects using the device. Writing has become a primary skill in everyday lessons and the use of the Chromebooks allows for this. The Chromebook is also a touch device so the familiarity of touch from the iPad will be an easy transition.

Apps, now called Extensions will be delivered in the same manner as the iPad, in that all applications will be delivered on a portal page or from the Chrome Web Store specifically for Neshaminy Students.
