MATHEMATICS
The traditional 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math courses are designed to help students develop an understanding of mathematical concepts, build fluency with procedures, and solve mathematical problems. Each course provides the proper focus, rigor, and coherence required to achieve grade-level mathematics. Courses, units, lessons, activities, and representations are sequenced to help students develop an understanding of mathematical concepts, build fluency with procedures, and solve mathematical problems that reflect their lived experiences.
The 6th Grade Math Honors course is an accelerated program designed for students who demonstrate strong mathematical abilities and a desire for advanced learning. This course challenges students to deepen their understanding of foundational math concepts while introducing more complex topics to prepare them for higher-level math. Students will explore ratios and proportional reasoning, fractions, decimals, integers, geometry, data analysis, and introductory algebraic concepts.
Emphasis is placed on problem-solving, critical thinking, and applying mathematical reasoning to real-world scenarios. Honors-level coursework incorporates collaborative projects, independent exploration, and rigorous assessments to foster a deeper engagement with math. This course is ideal for students who are self-motivated, eager to take on challenges, and committed to academic excellence. Completion of this program prepares students for advanced pathways in middle school math. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation, qualifying test scores, or demonstrated aptitude in mathematics.
The 7th Grade Math Honors course is designed for students who excel in mathematics and are ready for a rigorous, accelerated curriculum. This course builds upon foundational math concepts while introducing advanced topics to prepare students for higher-level mathematics. Key topics include proportional relationships, linear equations, integers, geometry, statistics, and probability. Students will engage in problem-solving, critical thinking, and real-world applications to deepen their understanding of mathematical principles.
Honors-level coursework emphasizes analytical reasoning, collaborative projects, and independent learning to challenge students academically. This class is ideal for students who are motivated to tackle challenging concepts and demonstrate a strong work ethic in math. Successful completion of this course prepares students for advanced math pathways, including Algebra 1.
Successful completion of 6th Grade Honors Math is highly recommended for enrollment.
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation, qualifying test scores, or prior advanced coursework.
Algebra 1 includes Foundations of Mathematics. Concepts include: Algebraic Sentences, Variables/Expressions, Polynomials Equations and their Application, Solving/Graphing Systems of Equations, Factoring Polynomials, Rational Expressions, Solving/Graphing Linear Inequalities, Writing Linear Functions, and Probability/Odds. Students will learn to utilize the graphing calculator in appropriate situations. Problem solving, reasoning, estimation, and connections between math and everyday applications will be emphasized throughout Algebra 1. This course is designed to prepare students for Algebra II and Geometry. Successful completion of 7th grade honors math is highly recommended to enroll in this course. This is a one credit course, if taken at the high school level.
