This article tells the story of the Comanche, or Nʉmʉnʉʉ, meaning ‘The People,’ known as the ‘Lords of the Plains.’ You will learn how they became expert horse riders, fought battles on horseback, and traded and bred horses that changed life across Texas. You will also see how important the buffalo was for food, clothing, and shelter. As you read, think about what it might have been like to ride with the Comanche across the plains and why horses and buffalo were so important to their way of life.
