"Just as man cannot live without dreams, he cannot live without hope. If dreams reflect the past, hope summons the future." - Elie Wiesel
We've reached the end of Night (and the end of the grading period!).
Honors - Start the week finishing the last three (and very short) chapters of Night and proceed to an exam of the second half of the novel.

Everyone will have an opportunity late in the week to catch up on missing and/or incomplete work. Additionally:

The pure mathematician is much more of an artist than a scientist. He invents complex and playful patterns without the least regard for their practical applicability.
— Alan Watts, 1964
The end of the first grading cycle is upon us! Our 8th grade math classes have finished their first two units, and in this final week of the period we'll put serious effort into patching up any missing or low grades.
Algebra 1: Our study of linearity continues, as we move from understanding the graphical features of lines to connecting the various forms their equations can take. Please continue to encourage your student to complete their work in a timely manner, as gaps in one skill or concept hurt the understanding of the next. Especially when class time is dedicated to problem-solving, students who take advantage of the time and available help will make better progress.
Geometry: Geometry students completed their Unit 2 test in Week 8. Their initial scores were solid, and will end up higher as I get their written work scored for additional partial credit. Unit 3 is the first of 4 consecutive units in which we explore the depths of triangles. Curious students will find a lot of surprising structure connected to these simple 3-sided figures!

Tutoring available before school by appointment on Wednesday and Thursday; and after school on Thursdays 3:45-4:30. wkoepp@neisd.net
EXPERIMENT. FAIL. LEARN. REPEAT.
We will begin the week reviewing ecosystems and energy pyramids as well as abiotic and biotic factors. We will then discuss how natural events disrupt ecosystems and how the area changes over time through ecological succession. We will discuss both primary and secondary succession and how both of these begin.
Tutoring is offered on Thursdays, students can attend from 3:45-4:15.

End of the Nine Weeks brings the start of a new unit: the super exciting and very interesting New Government unit! Your student will get to learn about cool ideas like federalism! And I know every 13 year old's favorite topic is the Ninth Amendment to the Constitution! Just wait until we talk about the Connecticut Compromise! I'm joking, its not the most exciting unit, but it is one of the more important ones. We'll be learning about the basics of US government and the Constitution.

Hello to Our DATA Families!
I am excited to be working with your students this year. We will be exploring graphic design elements and principles, photography, print media and design, video game principles, coding, and video game design and production in our classes this year.
Graphic Design & Illustration I: Students will create digital designs to represent Hispanic Heritage Month, selecting influential Hispanic individuals who have impacted them personally or contributed to American or global culture. Their designs will emphasize the principles and elements of design, showcasing abstract or concrete visions that celebrate and honor this culturally significant month.
Video Game Design: Students will create their own Pong game in SNAP! by designing interactive sprites, controlling a bouncing ball, coding movable paddles, adding scorekeeping, and incorporating sound effects to build a fully functional game.
About Me: My name is Elizabeth Fuentes Malin. I am a technology applications teacher and have been teaching for sixteen years. I am married with one child who is now at DATA with us! I attended OLLU, UIW, Lamar University, and now UNT. I hold degrees in English, Communication Arts, Administration, Educational Technology Leadership, and now am working on my doctorates in Learning Technologies and Machine Learning.
My email is emalin@neisd.net
Tutoring is Friday morning or by appointment only
Architecture students did a fantastic job on their Walls, Windows, and Doors knowledge check!! I am SOOOO proud of the growth they've demonstrated. We are now in full swing on our unit in interior design. This is a favorite for most of my students. Can't wait to see what they create!
Digital Media students have begun TYPOTOBER!!! October is the month we concentrate heavily on typography. The way fonts and words appear on the screen can be a HUGE struggle for beginning designers. This unit I do my best to teach them about a font's voice and in the process, I like to throw in a little love about how important their own voice is, too.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me an email.
