Week 37: May 19 - 22
Please check the newsletter homepage for important information and dates!
We will be finishing up our classic novels, doing book groups, and having some fun with Greek mythology and the words that come from those stories.
Remaining classic novel reading schedule:
By Monday, May 19th:
Tom Sawyer: Ch. 30-end, related reading.
Alice Books: related reading (Both books should already be finished.)
A Tale of Two Cities: Book 3, Ch. 8-end.
The Hobbit: Ch. 15-end.
There will be quizzes and discussion groups.
There is no new homework for ELAR this week, but students are encouraged to get any missing homework from previous weeks done.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
HAM & Honors
Students that have not completed their presentation slides may be sent to another class to complete it. The rest of my classes will be watching Monster's University and connecting the movie to the career readiness and math teks. Students will be expected to follow along with the movie and answer questions.
I can be reached via remind and email:jstarr1@neisd.net

6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
Next week we will be moving onto the ROCK CYCLE. Students will be learning about the 3 types of rocks, as well as the processes that form and deconstruct them.
It is the last week of school! Make sure your student has all of their missing work turned in ASAP, and check their grades in skyward.
Here is an updated grading policy for my class that was shared on 3/17/25:
Extra Copies will be found in the files by my desk. They are organized by week. (it is week 1 for the 4th nine weeks right now)
Missing assignments will be a zero until turned in.
Every Assignment will have 1 week to turn in, after that, it will remain a zero in the gradebook.
You may use an extra copy of an assignment to make up an assignment for up to an 80.
For online assignments, I will offer digital copies.
If you are absent, you still need to turn in your work.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
If your student has missing grades or zeros, encourage them to come to my tutoring for help!
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 05/22/2025
One week left!!! It seems like August was just yesterday! I would like to thank our DATA families and students for a wonderful year! I wish you all a fun-filled summer and an AMAZING 7th grade year! Please remember to keep in touch with your 6th grade teachers and let us know all about the fantastic things you will be doing next year!
This week we will be finishing up our part of the Chicken Coop PBL this week.
Monday, May the 19th is our map test over Oceania.
Tutorials
No open tutorials this week - tutorials are by invitation only and for those students who are is need of remediation.
Group C Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - Time to start earning those hours for 7th grade!!! Remember that as of April 1, 2025 any hours you earn goes towards your 10 hours for next year:) Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Week 37:
Here we are! Our last week of school. Can you believe it has been 10 months? Most, if not some, students will be finishing up the PBL Chicken Coop Website, taking their final Touch Typing final exam as well as the final Blooket to review this last year's Tech Apps content.
I have said it before and will always say this about this group of 6th graders - they are such a talented and bright group of students. It has been a pleasure being their Tech Apps teacher this year and look forward to see their accomplishments in 7th grade. This was my first year teaching middle school and I look forward to next year here at DATA.
I made a deal with my first group of 6th graders. Six years from now they will be preparing to graduate from high school. I want to see them walk the stage and finish what they started here at DATA. When they leave, I will retire from teaching. 31 years is my goal. Here's to the Class of 2031!! See you at the finish line! Have a great summer and see you next year around DATA!
~Mr. Garcia
With the year coming to an end, it's time to review the work we've done and the skills students have been developing over the last nine months. Since all their work is posted on their portfolios, we'll take a couple of days to evaluate each other's work so we can determine their favorites.
If there is one skill we know for sure every student progressed in their mastery of, it's being confronted with an unfamiliar piece of software and learning enough to create something with it in a short amount of time. We put this to the test by giving students who have completed their portfolios a few days to make a game with Microsoft's "Kodu Game Lab", which is a simplified 3D construction kit that easily lets users make fully functional (if a bit basic) video games. Our goal each year is to run KoduCon during the last week of school - a round-robin "competition" in which each students plays every working game and votes on their favorite. It makes for an exciting ending to a year packed with projects!
