"You want to know how to rhyme, then learn how to add. It's mathematics." - Mos Def
Algebra 1: Our introduction to Linear Functions is nearly through, we're in the last leg leading to the Unit 2 test. Students ended last week with some formative assessment on what we've covered so far, leading to the final topic of the unit on graphing. If your student seems to be struggling, please encourage them to come in for help, either on Thursday afternoon or by appointment (see below). I tell them regularly that nothing we're doing is so difficult that they can't do it with a little help and directed effort!
Geometry: Once upon a time a group called Blondie had a massive hit album called Parallel Lines. Remarkably unrelated to pop music, our recent focus has been on parallel lines, and the angles that make them. The students seem to have the basics down well, so that our Unit 2 test should be history by Monday, Sept. 30. Our geometers are moving into compass and straightedge constructions, and tech tools built on them, to engage the rich world of triangles. It should be starting to feel more like we're doing Geometry, with less emphasis on Algebra ideas.

EXPERIMENT. FAIL. LEARN. REPEAT.
We finished our subunits of Cells and Genetics. We will being the week with an assessment over both Cells and Genetics. If students score below a 70%, they will need to attend tutoring and retest. Students also need to ensure that all work from our Cells and Genetics subunit is turned in.
We will then shift our focus to our Ecology unit. We will begin the week reviewing ecosystems and energy pyramids as well as abiotic and biotic factors. We will then discuss how natural events disrupt ecosystems and how the area changes over time through ecological succession.
Tutoring is offered on Thursdays, students can attend from 3:45-4:15.

"The details are not the details. They make the design." – Charles Eames
Hello to Our DATA Families!
I am excited to be working with your students this year. We will be exploring graphic design elements and principles, photography, print media and design, video game principles, coding, and video game design and production in our classes this year.
Graphic Design & Illustration I: Next week students will use GIMP to enhance and edit photos. From adjusting brightness to applying filters, they’re exploring the art of transforming raw images into visually captivating pieces. This hands-on experience with GIMP not only sharpens their technical skills but also prepares them for the next exciting step: the photography unit. Soon, they'll be stepping behind the lens, capturing their own photos to apply their newfound editing knowledge, blending creativity with digital mastery to tell stories through their own visual perspective.
Video Game Design: Next week, students will use SNAP! to create their very own Pong game. They'll learn essential programming concepts like loops, conditionals, and variables while bringing this classic arcade game to life. Through this interactive project, students will not only develop their coding skills but also gain a deeper understanding of game design and logic, all while having fun with one of the most iconic games in history. It’s an exciting opportunity to combine creativity and problem-solving through code!
About Me: My name is Elizabeth Fuentes Malin. I am a technology applications teacher and have been teaching for sixteen years. I am married with one child who is now at DATA with us! Architecture students have done fantastic getting the hang of sketching out walls, windows and doors accroding to a floor plan in SketchUp. I must say, while it is a very basic architectural task, it is NOT easy. Your students have done FANTASTIC mastering these skills. I am so proud of them! Next week, we will start our unit on interior design!
Digital Media students have put three important skill sets in their tool box this month: symmetry, grid layout and rule of thirds. Next month is "Typotober" where we take an in depth look at typography and its importance in design.
