Mathematics is the most beautiful and most powerful creation of the human spirit.

Algebra 1: This week we began our first instructional unit, Linear Equations and Inequalities, in earnest. More than any other topic in the course, this material is very skill-oriented. Subsequent units will move from such a computational emphasis, to a study of various mathematical "functions" that can be built through hands-on experiences. Students can look forward to engaging Unit 2 (Linear Functions) via marbles and Slinkies!
Geometry: Geometry starts with explicit connections to ideas from Coordinate Geometry that were touched on in Algebra 1. The students have very strong recall and skill on most of what we've done, so that we'll move to the "logic and proof" part of the unit shortly. I'm excited to share this with them, as it's the part of mathematics that ultimately drew me to pursue deep studies in mathematics. I hope they will enjoy it!

EXPERIMENT. FAIL. LEARN. REPEAT.
Last week in Science we focused on foundational skills. We worked on asking questions, generating hypothesis, collecting data, and sharing findings. We looked at several experimental designs and identified independent/dependent variables as well as experimental/control groups. We created and analyzed graphs using given data.
This week our focus will be on

Ahoy! Week 3 of school and we'll sailing around this week, exploring mercantilism and triangular trade! We'll be playing my infamous Mercantilism Game this week. Students will be randomly selected to become Mother England or the 13 colonies and they'll get to see first hand the impacts of mercantilism.

Greetings DATA Families!
Have a great week!
Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future.” - Robert L. Peters
Hello to Our DATA Families!
I am excited to be working with your students this year. We will be exploring graphic design elements and principles, photography, print media and design, video game principles, coding, and video game design and production in our classes this year.
Graphic Design & Illustration I: Students will learn to use GIMP as a powerful raster-graphics tool, enhancing their understanding of photography techniques, filters, and other image-editing concepts. This knowledge will deepen their ability to apply GIMP's features to various creative and technical projects.
Video Game Design: Students will explore the basics of drawing shapes in Snap! through coding with algorithms and repeat blocks, students will be developing foundational skills in video game design and programming, setting the stage for creating their first 2D video game.
About Me: My name is Elizabeth Fuentes Malin. I am a technology applications teacher and have been teaching for sixteen years. I am married with one child who is now at DATA with us! I attended OLLU, UIW, Lamar University, and now UNT. I hold degrees in English, Communication Arts, Administration, Educational Technology Leadership, and now am working on my doctorates in Learning Technologies and Machine Learning.

In my classes this week, students went through an in depth and detailed review of the NEISD Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Further, they ALL passed an assessment in which they all showed mastery of the content. Please ask your student to show you the AUP which is posted in all of my Google Classrooms.
Both classes will be finishing up a design project on Monday that will show off knowledge of the AUP. It will also give me a baseline of their design skills. It is always fun to see how much they improve by the end of the year!
