"Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change."
- Stephen Hawking
Our impromptu extended break last week set us back a bit, but we got this!
We move forward in our argumentative unit with notes about additional rhetorical devices and logical fallacies. We will practice identifying these devices and fallacies and then apply the knowledge by using them (or not, in the case of fallacies).
This upcoming week we do have the ELAR Interim STAAR testing - this is an opportunity to gauge where students are in their learning and what we may need to go back and cover more in the coming weeks.

"The power of mathematics is often to change one thing into another, to change geometry into language."
- Marcus du Sautoy
We're already through Week 3 of the spring semester. Before you know it these 8th graders will be off to high school! We got a preview by touring Roosevelt High School on Thursday.
Algebra 1: We're nearing the end of our unit on exponential functions, taking a little extra time to explore how the new ideas differ from the linear concepts of the first semester. Next up will be polynomials, which we then narrow to two units covering quadratic functions. It's important that students work hard to keep up, and come in for help as soon as trouble arises.
Geometry: Our introduction to trigonometry is coming to an end, giving us a powerful tool as we move into polygons and circles. In the context of applying geometry we're working to strengthen persistence and resilience in solving difficult problems, which are key adjunct skills for success in more advanced math.
In all of my classes we allot significant class time for assignments. Please encourage your student to take advantage of this time, as anything they don't finish in class needs to be completed as homework. Most students' struggles arise from lack of focus and effort in class.

Tutoring: You can email me at wkoepp@neisd.net and I'll work to arrange tutoring support with me or another teacher, until I'm able to be back for regular times.
EXPERIMENT. FAIL. LEARN. REPEAT.
Last week's cold weather and field trip has us a tad behind and next week we have benchmark testing on Monday and Tuesday. We will also be continue our study of Newton's three laws of motion.
Students will learn that Newton's First Law explains how objects remain at rest or in motion unless acted upon by an external force, highlighting the concept of inertia.
Newton's Second Law shows how force, mass, and acceleration are related, teaching how stronger forces or lighter objects result in faster movement.
Lastly, Newton's Third Law demonstrates that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, helping students understand interactions like rocket launches or swimming strokes.
Tutoring is offered on Mondays; students can attend from 3:45-4:15.
Students are also welcomed to set up an appointment for a different time, if needed.
If you have any questions, you may email me at egonza10@neisd.net.

Onto Unit 6: Industrialization, one of my personal favorite units. As long as the district-made test doesn't cause me any issues (😒), this should be a quick unit. We'll start off with some note-taking and discussion. This unit culminates in my all time favorite activity to do with students: The Urban Game. *insert epic theme music*

Veni, Creavi, Vici. I came. I created. I conquered.
Hello to Our DATA Families!
Graphic Design & Illustration I: Students are beginning their animation unit, where they will complete a series of assignments to develop their skills. They will have the opportunity to animate scenarios such as a ball rolling or bouncing, as well as a shooting star, allowing them to explore key animation techniques and bring their ideas to life.
Video Game Design: Students will program a fish tank animation where they will enhance the existing code by creating a custom function, such as drawFish, to generate multiple fish of various shapes and colors, giving our lonely fish some much-needed company. Their functions should include at least two parameters that control aspects like the fish's position or size, allowing for greater customization and variety in your underwater scene.
About Me: My name is Elizabeth Fuentes Malin. I am a technology applications teacher and have been teaching for sixteen years. I am married with one child who is now at DATA with us! I attended OLLU, UIW, Lamar University, and now UNT. I hold degrees in English, Communication Arts, Administration, Educational Technology Leadership, and now am working on my doctorates in Learning Technologies and Machine Learning.

While it was nice to have the bad weather day, it did put a dent in my plans. We also had a half day tour of DATA HS where students had a chance to see the awesome things they will experience in the years to come. Unfortunately, we didn't accomplish nearly is much in my classes as I had hoped.
Architecture students have combined rooms ensuring there are no double walls or strange little hallways to nowhere. It sounds a whole lot easier than it is. Next week we begin researching and designing roofs.
To finish up Jan-HUE-ary, we will have a lot of fun presenting our work. It will be fun to see each other's work and gather feedback before they turn in a final product.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me an email.
