"I like cooking my family and my pets."
Do you see what's happening here??
Punctuation matters!
Grammar study continues this week -punctuation will be the primary focus (and we didn't get to work on commonly confused words last week, so we'll work that in this week as well).
A district-assigned end-of-unit exam takes place this week as well ... let's see how we do with informational texts!

A new 9-week cycle, a new unit, a new start. This is a great opportunity to reflect on what worked the first 9 weeks, what didn't, and adjust as we move into mostly new material.
Algebra 1: The past week we started into the business of translating data and words into equations. My intention is that we'll spend time connecting these algebra ideas to real-world things like modeling data, making predictions from models, and perhaps some coding. Once we've built these skills, we'll finish the semester with a unit on systems of linear equations.
Geometry: Triangles, so seemingly simple, have a lot of secrets. We're discovering some of them now--points that line up, lines that unexpectedly all pass through a single point, and points that end up all being on a common circle. This is just a taste of the type of stuff that makes mathematicians tick. This unit will finish up soon, and the final two units will dive into congruence and similarity. This should lend itself to some tie-ins with architecture.

Tutoring available before school by appointment on Wednesday and Thursday; and after school on Thursdays 3:45-4:30. wkoepp@neisd.net
EXPERIMENT. FAIL. LEARN. REPEAT.
Last week our focus was on the main groups on the periodic table, metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. We looked at both physical and chemical properties, with a focus on general properties such as ability to conduct heat and electricity, insulators, malleability, and ductility.
Students are learning to use the periodic table as a reference to identify different types of atoms based on their chemical symbols. They are understanding how to count the number of each atom present in a chemical formula. This skill helps them differentiate between elements and compounds.
Students will be able to interpret chemical formulas, and accurately count the number of each type of atom in a given formula, they will use both subcripts and coefficients to help them count atoms.
Tutoring is offered on Mondays; students can attend from 3:45-4:15.
Students are also welcomed to set up an appointment for a different time.

We are Living History!

This week we will be working our way through a Constitutional DBQ, analyzing primary source documents and their impact on the creation and powers of the Constitution. Students received their first round of history homework: vocabulary, last week! Students will have this week to come up with definitions and become familiar with the terms, after which they will take their first Unit 3 Vocab Quiz on the 25th of October, this Friday.

Hello to Our DATA Families!
I am excited to be working with your students this year. We will be exploring graphic design elements and principles, photography, print media and design, video game principles, coding, and video game design and production in our classes this year.
Graphic Design & Illustration I: Students are working on their literary magazine which will contain their own writings, short stories, paralleled with artwork design by themselves to to emphasize the principles and elements of design, showcasing abstract or concrete visions.
Video Game Design: Students are learning about Abstraction and Generalization. These are concepts in the programming world that help coders to recognize opportunities to improve algorithms by abstracting or generalizing parts into sub-procedures.They will be coding a series of video game steps that apply these concepts to generate blocks, variables, and sprites in their assignments leading up to a Platform Game project in the upcoming weeks.
About Me: My name is Elizabeth Fuentes Malin. I am a technology applications teacher and have been teaching for sixteen years. I am married with one child who is now at DATA with us! I attended OLLU, UIW, Lamar University, and now UNT. I hold degrees in English, Communication Arts, Administration, Educational Technology Leadership, and now am working on my doctorates in Learning Technologies and Machine Learning.

Tutoring is Friday morning or by appointment only
Architecture students have made some pretty fantastic interior design projects working under some really challenging conditions. Next week they will be taking their interior design projects and making a color board to showcase their designs. However, your students are doing AWESOME!!
Digital Media students have learned how to create some pretty cool text effects this week. Next week the "Typotober" project is due. This is a test grade. Please help your student to get this assignment done so we can present what we've learned this week.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me an email.
