"I never made a mistake in grammar but one in my life and as soon as I done I seen it."
- Carl Sandburg
A new grading period begins with some grammar study. We'll start with practice on some commonly confused words (affect/effect, its/it's, there/their/they're ...), identify proper use of punctuation, and work with complex sentences.
There will be a campus common assessment over informational text next week.

"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics."
- Paul Halmos
Well, the first 9-week grading cycle is in the books! After meeting with our Roosevelt DATA math colleagues I'm increasing the emphasis on building the habits necessary for success in challenging high school level coursework, such as solid independent notetaking, immediate engagement in assignments, and timely completion of all assigned work.
Algebra 1: We finished Unit 2 this week, and a number of students found it more challenging than the first. Unit 1 was heavily grounded in revisiting material from previous math courses, and the transition to learning new ideas is often bumpy by comparison. Typically students will rise to the bigger challenge, and find their footing over the next few weeks.
Geometry: Most of week 9 was focused on hands-on exploration of some key segments and points associated with triangles, as we develop and understanding of their nature and properties. My favorite days are when the students are collaborating to solve challenging problems, and are able to discover deep ideas in the process!

Tutoring available before school by appointment on Wednesday and Thursday; and after school on Thursdays 3:45-4:30. wkoepp@neisd.net
EXPERIMENT. FAIL. LEARN. REPEAT.
We will be taking our Ecology unit exam on Tuesday! Unit test will cover ecosystems and energy pyramids as well as abiotic and biotic factors. There will be some genetics as well as traits and adaptations on the test.
We will begin our Matter and Energy unit on Wednesday! We will cover the main groups on the periodic table, metals, nonmentals, and metalloids. We will complete a lab activity that focuses on classifying these three main groups by physical and chemical properties. Students will focus on general properties such as conductors, insulators, malleability, and ductility.
Tutoring is offered on Mondays; students can attend from 3:45-4:15.
Students are also welcomed to set up an appointment for a different time.

The Constitution! It's time! We'll be learning about the creation of the Constitution and in the next few weeks we'll be really digging into the document, examining its structure and principles. This Unit is incredibly vocab heavy. Students will be receiving their first round of history homework: vocabulary! Students will have two weeks to come up with definitions and become familiar with the terms, after which they will take their first Unit 3 Vocab Quiz on the 25th of October.

Hello to Our DATA Families!
I am excited to be working with your students this year. We will be exploring graphic design elements and principles, photography, print media and design, video game principles, coding, and video game design and production in our classes this year.
Graphic Design & Illustration I: Students are wrapping up their digital designs to represent Hispanic Heritage Month. They will follow up the assignment with a book cover. They are starting their literary magazine which will contain their own writings, short stories, paralleled with artwork design by themselves to to emphasize the principles and elements of design, showcasing abstract or concrete visions that celebrate and honor this culturally significant month.
Video Game Design: Students are finishing their Pong game in SNAP! by designing interactive sprites, controlling a bouncing ball, coding movable paddles, adding scorekeeping, and incorporating sound effects to build a fully functional game.
About Me: My name is Elizabeth Fuentes Malin. I am a technology applications teacher and have been teaching for sixteen years. I am married with one child who is now at DATA with us! I attended OLLU, UIW, Lamar University, and now UNT. I hold degrees in English, Communication Arts, Administration, Educational Technology Leadership, and now am working on my doctorates in Learning Technologies and Machine Learning.

T1 is in the books. I have been so happy with the work I'm seeing.
Architecture students have planned their interior design projects. It is now time to put everything together in a 3d model. This week they will learn a couple of simple tools to add custom artwork, picture frames and baseboards.
Digital Media students had a great week discovering typeface voice with a couple fun projects. Next week they will learn how to create text that is inside an envelope (or a shape). Then they will take this new skill and create some digital art based on a few fun choices.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me an email.
