The Big Give is in full swing! This year we are asking for help funding our field trips! Donating to the fundraiser helps bridge financial gaps, covering field trip costs so no student is left out. It supports student learning by providing access to enriching experiences, fosters community involvement, and ensures every student can explore and grow beyond the classroom. Please consider donating using the link!
This week, we will focus in on four types of metaphor: Similes, personification, simple metaphors, and extended metaphors. We are also still working on using correct capitalization every time we write. Any help emphasizing this at home would be much appreciated.
We will be starting a deep dive into story elements, and coming in a few weeks: the Hatchet Escape Room Adventure!
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-50 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
HAM
This week students will write and solve equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign. Monday they will have an edpuzzle over solving equations with the variables on both sides. They will then work on the lesson assignment. Wednesday and Thursday, they will have a lesson over writing equations with variables on boths sides using real world word problems. They will also explore how to solve inequalities with variables on both sides of the inequality sign on Friday.
Honors
I pushed back the Comparing Salaries assignments until Monday. Students will have an edpuzzle over the notes and work on the assignment afterwards. Tuesday and Wednesday, students will have an opportunity to work on the study guide for their Unit 1 test. This study guide can be used on their test. Thursday and Friday, students will have their first unit exam over Unit 1. If students do not pass the test on Thursday, they will be given an opportunity to retake in in class on Friday.
Extensions:
When students are done with their current work, they will access their extension work on Google Classroom. The program is called Delta Math. There will be assignments for each skill or lesson we do in class. The students ARE NOT expected to complete them at home. Your student is more then welcome to complete it if they need more practice though. I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period.
Homework
Homework is usually given out Monday and it's due Friday. If there is a short week, I will adjust the deadline.
HAM: Simplifying Expressions HW
Honors: Integer Operations HW

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
We are continuing our study of Ecology! The class will be learning about the energy levels in an ecological pyramid as well as the relationships and systems organisms share.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
Journals are the best way for a student to study for quizzes, which they will have ample time to do in-class.
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am!
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 9/20/2024
This week we will have our FIRST UNIT TEST over Map Skills on Monday the 16th. Please be checking with your student's Google Classroom for review and test dates. After we test out of our first unit, we will begin to explore the topic of Human Environment Interaction - how people and the Earth imapct each other.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Chicken Tenders GROUP D Meets this Week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Can you believe it's week 6 already?! Like they say, time flies... We will continue with Typing.com and work on our accuracy and seeing how many words-per-minute (wpm) we are reaching. So far, I'm seeing a lot of progress from you all. Let's keep up the pace and continue to advance our typing/keyboarding skills. Keep an eye out for timed typing assessments as we progress.
We will continue with computer basics and have a quiz before the end of the week over the material and notes we have up until now. You will learn to continue to navigate through your desktop computer and also learn some troubleshooting skills along the way. They help us in our everyday lives, so let's keep learning and understanding our technology.
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time in Room 2414. Please make arrangements with me and your POD teacher.
Everyone have an amazing week! Let's go!!

Students will continue with Photoshop skills this week, finishing up their Title slides for their video. They will transfer their PSD file from Photopea to Adobe Photoshop and finalize their font choices and layer styles, as well as match up up the four text layers with one of their unique gradient backgrounds. Students who have completed their Titles have an opportunity to work on improving images that were not already been professionally optimized when they were added to their collection. The non-destructive adjustment layers they will add allow them to return to their original file and tweak the changes they made if they decide to. This includes deepening the blacks and brightening the lighter areas in a way that makes the color and detail pop. These not only work better when incorporated into their video but make an excellent "Before and After" comparison to display on their digital portfolios.
