This week, we will dive into figurative language, especially types of metaphor. We will also be finishing our Hatchet Mini-Essay (with writing lessons interspersed).
We will go to the school library for book check-out on Friday, Sept. 13th.
I have sent the notebook covers to the library to be laminated.
BrainPOP was not working correctly for our district the first three days of September, so I gave students time in class to finish last week's homework, and extended the deadline for the previous week's homework by one week. We should be all caught up.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-50 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
My tutoring times are
HAM
Students will have their Science MAP test on Monday. We will use this as a catch up day. Students can complete their homework and any other work they still owe me or other classes. Tuesday we will start Unit 2 over Equations and Inequalities.
Honors
Students will have their Science MAP test on Monday. We will use this as a catch up day. Students can complete their homework and any other work they still owe me or other classes. Tuesday students will have their first CFA(quiz) over integer operations. I allow two days for the quiz so students can retake if they failed and students that were absent the day before have a chance to make it up without having to come to tutoring after school. Thursday and Friday we will have back to back lessons over paying for college and comparing annual salaries and lifetime salaries of jobs.
Extensions:
When students are done with their current work, they will access their extension work on Google Classroom. The program is called Delta Math. There will be assignments for each skill or lesson we do in class. The students ARE NOT expected to complete them at home. Your student is more then welcome to complete it if they need more practice though. I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period.
Homework
Homework is usually given out Monday and it's due Friday. If there is a short week, I will adjust the deadline.
HAM: Scientific Notation HW
Honors: Order of Operations HW
Tutoring :
Tuesday 3:40 to 4:30 - Make up quizzes and tests Only (7H & 6H)
Friday 3:40 to 4:30 - help with homework, lessons, or need to catch up on work. (7H & 6H)
Students MUST let me know a week ahead of time if they will stay for tutoring so I can make sure to have the appropriate work available. If I need your student to stay for tutoring, I will reach out.
Tutoring WILL NOT start until the week of September 9th.
I can be reached via remind and email:jstarr1@neisd.net

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
We start off strong this week with a dive right into Ecology! The class will be learning about Biotic and Abiotic factors, how they work in an environment, and their relationship to each other.
There will be a quiz over what we learned for the week on Friday.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
Journals are the best way for a student to study for quizzes, which they will have ample time to do in-class.
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am!
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 9/13/2024
This week we will have our FIRST UNIT TEST over Map Skills. Please be checking with your student's Google Classroom for review and test dates. It is scheduled for Thursday the 12th.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Chicken Tenders GROUP C Meets this Week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Here we go with Week 5! We will get back into checking our typing skills in Typing.com. It is the foundation of any technology course you will take from here on out. We will also continue with the "nuts and bolts" of classroom technology and our computers in general.
We will discover that our technology will not always work, so let's look at some troubleshooting skills that will help us out.
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning in Room 2414. Please make arrangements with me ahead of time
It's beginning to feel like Fall around here! Let's continue our venture in to Tech Apps. See you soon, Eagles!

This week we dive into Photoshop skills, including how to use a superb online clone called Photopea for when students don't have access to the full Adobe suite.
We will be making an "Intro" graphic as well one for each category they selected that will introduce that part of their video. They will be applying all manner of special effects to their text that will turn them into uniquely creative art pieces, including as Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss and Drop Shadows. A bit of blending mode magic with the gradient tool and they'll have several one-of-a-kind backgrounds to make their text-art truly shine!
