This week is all about reviewing for our ELAR STAAR test on April 8th.I have given each student individualized work targeted to their own strengths and needs, and we will be doing other review material together.
Continuing this week, we are temporarily banning comic books, manga, and picture-heavy funny fiction from in-class SSR time. This is to help and encourage students build up their reading muscles ahead of April 8th's ELAR STAAR test. This is a great chance for those who have been reading comic books or manga exclusively to find a great paragraphs-only book.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. It will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
Every Assignment from 2/24 and forward is on this current grading period T4.

6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
Hello, Next week we are continuing our study of Tides, and what not only what causes them, but what we need them for.
Here is an updated grading policy for my class that was shared on 3/17/25:
Extra Copies will be found in the files by my desk. They are organized by week. (it is week 1 for the 4th nine weeks right now)
Missing assignments will be a zero until turned in.
Every Assignment will have 1 week to turn in, after that, it will remain a zero in the gradebook.
You may use an extra copy of an assignment to make up an assignment for up to an 80.
For online assignments, I will offer digital copies.
If you are absent, you still need to turn in your work.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
If your student has missing grades or zeros, encourage them to come to my tutoring for help!
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 04/04/2025
This week we continue to analyze various Economic Systems throughout the world. Students will be comparing free enterprise, socialist, and communist economies in various contemporary societies, including the benefits of the U.S. free enterprise system.
We will also behaving a map quiz over Western Europe this Friday, April the 4th.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Group D Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Week 30:
Time seems to be flying as our school days go by and the weather gets warmer. Here we go!
We will continue several exercises with our touch typing skills and move on to more challenging activities to sharpen our typing skills. There will be assignments coming up with other Google Apps which we were introduced last semester. Information with our learning based project will be discussed to see what part Tech Apps will have in the final project of our DATA Chicken Coup. Course review material will be popping up so we can prepare for the course final in the next two months.
I'm still looking forward to this last stretch of our school year! Let's have an awesome week, folks!!
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time, lunch time, or possibly after school in Room 2414. Please make arrangements ahead of time with me.

There are 4 beginner apps that MIT provides tutorials for. Students will work their way through the first one using the built-in panel with instructions that introduces students to the different elements of the Design and Blocks screens. They built the structure out of components and modify their properties in the Design phase, then switch to the coding page where the behaviors for those components are controlled. This is illustrated with the Hello Codi app, with students adding a button and changing it's image to one of the MIT App Inventor mascot, the bee Codi. They add the non-visible Sound element and then code the button so that it plays a buzzing sound when the image of the bee is pressed. It's pretty straightforward, simple programming, but watching dozens of kids building, downloading and installing the app onto their assigned tablet and gleefully buzzing away is always a rewarding sight (and sound!
