This week will continue our a study of Greek and Latin root words and hone our editing skills. We will also work on analyzing poetry.
Continuing this week, we are temporarily banning comic books, manga, and picture-heavy funny fiction from in-class SSR time. This is to help and encourage students build up their reading muscles ahead of April 8th's ELAR STAAR test. This is a great chance for those who have been reading comic books or manga exclusively to find a great paragraphs-only book.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. It will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
Every Assignment from 2/24 and forward is on this current grading period T4.
HAM
Students will continue to explore comparing simple and compound interest with a digital escape assignment and another digital puzzle lesson.
We will end the week with a CFA over simple and compound interest.
Honors
Students will finish the unit this week with exploring percent bar graphs. They will have a couple of work days to get caught up on ALL the assignments for this unit.
We will end the week with a CFA over the whole unit.
Extensions/Extra Credit:
Delta Math Extensions!!!!
Students have access to their assigned extension lessons. Students will now work on these extension activities if they have time in class after their current lessons.
I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period.
Homework
Homework is usually given out Monday and it's due Friday. If there is a short week, I will adjust the deadline.
HAM: 7H Pythagorean Theorem STAAR HW
Honors: 6H Equations and Inequalities STAAR HW
Tutoring : Cancelled
Tuesday 3:40 to 4:30 - help with homework, lessons, or need to catch up on work. (7H & 6H).

6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
Hello, Next week we are continuing our topic of Seasons, but will move on to tides by the end of the week.
Here is an updated grading policy for my class that was shared on 3/17/25:
Extra Copies will be found in the files by my desk. They are organized by week. (it is week 1 for the 4th nine weeks right now)
Missing assignments will be a zero until turned in.
Every Assignment will have 1 week to turn in, after that, it will remain a zero in the gradebook.
You may use an extra copy of an assignment to make up an assignment for up to an 80.
For online assignments, I will offer digital copies.
If you are absent, you still need to turn in your work.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
If your student has missing grades or zeros, encourage them to come to my tutoring for help!
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 03/28/2025
This week we will be looking at various Economic Systems throughout the world. Students will be comparing free enterprise, socialist, and communist economies in various contemporary societies, including the benefits of the U.S. free enterprise system.
We will also behaving a map quiz over Western Europe this Friday, April the 4th.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Group C Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Week 29:
Spring is in the air and the weather is starting to warm up. This is the time of the school year that goes by so fast as we can start looking toward the final days of this academic school year. It always comes quickly. Here we go with the last 9 weeks of school.
We will continue with several exercises with our touch typing skills and move on to more challenging activities to sharpen our typing skills. As we begin with creating Google Forms, we will dive in to the other Google Apps which we were introduced to at the end of our last semester. More info. with our learning based project will be introduced to see what part Tech Apps will have in the final project of our DATA Chicken Coup.
I'm still looking forward to this last stretch of our school year! Let's have an awesome week, folks!!
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time, lunch time, or possibly after school in Room 2414. Please make arrangements ahead of time with me.

Our final unit of the year is Android Programming. We'll be using the web-based programming site MIT App Inventor, maintained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Though the interface has the appearance of simple block coding, what this system is capable of is anything but basic. Nearly every Android feature can be accessed and controlled, including accelerometer readings, data storage and retrieval, GPS calculations, even multi-touch input and wifi-strength triangulation! Once students have learned enough of the basics, they will be free to take on independent projects that will let them dive as deep as they feel capable of.
This is a very exciting Unit (the last of the year) because students now have experience with the professional software that enables them to create their own graphic assets for their apps. No need to download an alien or spaceship for a game - they can create their own!
