I hope everyone had an amazing Spring Break! returning to school, we will be studying poetry, comparisons between different kinds of texts.
We will also start a study unit on Greek and Latin root words and hone our editing skills.
Continuing this week, we are temporarily banning comic books, manga, and picture-heavy funny fiction from in-class SSR time. This is to help and encourage students build up their reading muscles ahead of April 8th's ELAR STAAR test. This is a great chance for those who have been reading comic books or manga exclusively to find a great paragraphs-only book.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. It will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
Every Assignment from 2/24 and forward is on this current grading period T4.
HAM
We will jump back into calculating simple and compound interest with a mystery game of WHO IS THE THIEF. Students will use the clue sheet the thief left to solve problems and solve the mystery. They will use their answers and look at the suspects and narrow the thief.
The rest of the week, students will work on the digital puzzle practice problems. There are three levels of problems. Students will work the problems on the packet and then type their answers online to see if they are right. Every right answer puts the puzzle in its correct spot.
Friday we will have stations with task cards.
Honors
We will work on Dot Plots, Box Plots, and Histograms. Students will learn how to create the graphs and how to interpret the data from them.
Extensions/Extra Credit:
Delta Math Extensions!!!!
Students have access to their assigned extension lessons. Students will now work on these extension activities if they have time in class after their current lessons.
I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period.
Homework
Homework is usually given out Monday and it's due Friday. If there is a short week, I will adjust the deadline.

6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
Welcome back from spring break! I hope it was relaxing! This week we are diving into our final unit: Earth and Space. We kick off the unit with Seasons and tides, so students will learn the following:
Earth's tilt and rotation
Earth's Revolution
How Earth's tilt, rotation and revolution affects seasons.
The Sun and Moon's effect on tides
How the different positions of the Moon, Earth, and Sun affect our planet.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
If your student has missing grades or zeros, encourage them to come to my tutoring for help!
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 03/21/2025

For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Group D Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.

Week 28:
Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope you all had a pleasant break and are ready to take on the last 9.5 weeks of this academic year.
We will continue with our typing skills and move on to more challenging activities to sharpen our typing skills and communication using Gmail. We will revisit the other Google Apps we were introduced to at the end of our last semester. A new learning based project will tie into the 6th grade DATA project involving our chicken coup (part of the Chicken Tenders Club). There is alot to cover before we end our 6th grade experience. I know our students will succeed as they prepare to move on to 7th grade. I'm looking forward to this last stretch of our school year! Let's have an awesome week, folks!!
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time, lunch time, or possibly after school in Room 2414. Please make arrangements ahead of time with me.

Wrapping up our unit on 3D Modeling and Animation means completing all renders, turning in all project files, then making sure the 3D page on each Digital Portfolio website documents the last 9 weeks accurately and completely. Portfolios are more than just collections of pictures and videos created during the unit - the writing that accompanies the graphics is just as important. Reading through a web page must give visitors a good idea of what was involved in the creation of the media being shown. Complete sentences and correct spelling are essential, as factors affecting legibility including font size, selection and color contrast.
