This week, we will continue to work on our persuasive essays, with writing instruction interspersed. We will be working on researching and concluding strong, with a lesson on effective use of quotes and truisms.
Continuing this week, we are temporarily banning comic books, manga, and picture-heavy funny fiction from in-class SSR time. This is to help and encourage students build up their reading muscles ahead of April 8th's ELAR STAAR test. This is a great chance for those who have been reading comic books or manga exclusively to find a great paragraphs-only book.
Early next week, we will take our unit 5 test (DEUA) on persuasive / argumentative writing.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. It will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
The last day to turn in ANY MISSING/LATE work is 2/28/25. Please have students check Skyward if they need to know what they are missing. Extra copies of the assignments can be printed from Google Classroom or picked up in my class.
HAM
Monday is a chance for students to retake the CFA from the week before or to make up the CFA if they were absent. If students do not need to retake the CFA or to make it up, they can start working on their study guide.
Tuesday, students will work strictly on their Unit Study Guide.
Wednesday through Friday, students will take their Unit exam. They can retake the exam if they need it. Wednesday through Friday is the field trip, which is why the test days will be extended.

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
Next week the class is going on a field trip! We will be wrapping up our unit on chemistry by understanding the indicators of a chemical reaction. We will begin to review for our District End of Unit Assessment.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
If your student has missing grades or zeros, encourage them to come to my tutoring for help!
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 02/28/2025
This week we will be looking at Economic Indicators to determine how a country's economy is doing. Is the economy thriving or not and why?
We will also be practicing our entire map of Asia - putting it all together for our map quiz right before we go out on Spring Break.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Group C Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Week 26:
Here we are with only 13 weeks to go for this school year to culminate. Where does the time go? Our 6th graders are chugging along and picking up new skills and learning how to survive middle school. I will continue to say it - "Our 6th graders at DATA are SO talented." Every day they seem to amaze me on how much they know.
We finish off the last week of February with our third and last video production. Once we have uploaded your video files, you can import into Adobe Premiere Pro and begin post production. Early deadline (for extra credit) is Friday, February 28. We end our 9 week grading cycle on March 7th. Then a well deserved week off of Spring Break! More with Google Apps as we move forward. Have a great week!
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time, lunch time, or possibly after school in Room 2414. Please make arrangements ahead of time with me.

Students should have completed one or two original models last week, and need to paint and animate them in Blender so they can show them off on their portfolios. With those parts done, the natural next step is to add some movement to the camera position and angle so as to look down on the model, allowing us to see every part of it, not just the view from the side view. Also, changing the background to bright green (or some other color not found in their model) allows some students to then composite their video with After Effects backgrounds they animate themselves. And as if THAT wasn't enough, we'll see if some of them can't film themselves "interacting" with their model in order to add yet another "dimension" to their composited video using Adobe Premiere. I can't wait to see if they can make it that far!
