This week, give our fourth and final impromptu speech. Students will then each choose one of their four impromptu speech outlines to develop into a persuasive essay.
Starting this week we are going to temporarily ban comic books, manga, and picture-heavy funny fiction from in-class SSR time. This is to help and encourage students to build up and stretch their reading muscles ahead of April's ELAR STAAR test. We will be going to the library on Monday, February 10th for book check-out and return. This is a great chance for those who have been reading comic books or manga to find a paragraphs-only book.
We will do district Formative Assessments on persuasive writing this week.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. It will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
HAM
This week students will explore how to calculate the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres. If we have enough time, they may move into the lesson on determining the surface area of rectangular prisms.
Honors
This week students will explore how to calculate the area of rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids.
Extensions/Extra Credit:
Delta Math Extensions!!!!
Students have access to their assigned extension lessons. Students will now work on these extension activities if they have time in class after their current lessons.
I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period. This was due last friday. I will post more lessons when we come back from the break.
Homework
Homework is usually given out Monday and it's due Friday. If there is a short week, I will adjust the deadline.
HAM: 7H Functions and Slope STAAR HW
Honors: 6H Rational Number Operations STAAR HW

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
Next week the class will be discussing Metals, Metalloids, and Non-Metals, as well as sections of the periodic tables.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
Journals are the best way for a student to study for quizzes and tests, which they will have ample time to do in-class.
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 02/14/2025
This week we start our new unit over Economics! This is always a fun unit to work in. We will start our study with the relationship between Geographic Factors and the economies of certain places. Be on the lookout for another Map test - this time over the Northern half of Asia.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Group B Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Week 24:
We are underway with our third and last video production assignment. This will have you do your own production and record your own footage. Once we are ready to upload your videos, please get with me so we can help with that effort. When you have your video files ready to import into Adobe Premiere Pro, you can begin post production. We need to have this soon and turned in completed by Friday, February 28. This 3rd 9 week grading cycle will end on March 7th. Let me know if we need to make accommodations as you do all your production work as well.
We will continue to add to our typing skills by looking at punctuation keys and capitalization. Always check your Google Classroom to stay updated on assignments.
Future assessments will also come soon as we move forward during this third grading period. Let's have a great week!
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time or possibly after school in Room 2414. Please make arrangements ahead of time with me and your POD teacher.
~Mr. Garcia
We've been working on getting our houses from the Sketchup modeling program over to Blender, a powerful 3D program that helps us create much more realistic renders with light and shadows being accurately calculated. This is open-source software that has been developed over the years by some VERY talented people so that everyone has access to Hollywood-level animation tools... for free. We will concentrate on simple lighting and keyframing of a 360° spin of our model to post on our portfolios before we return to Sketchup to sculpt something a bit more interesting than a simple house.
Students who complete this simpler animation will be exploring some of the advanced features that are available to us now that we have more powerful computers with dedicated graphics cards. Scenes we used to leave rendering overnight can now be completed in a single class period!
