This week, we will continue our unit on rhetoric and persuasive writing, with more impromptu speaking, in-class debates, and persuasive writing.
We will have two quizzes this week, one on rhetoric, specifically ethos, pathos, and logos,
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. It will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
HAM
Students will start our Geometry Unit by exploring Circumference and Area of circles. We will close out the week with extending our knowledge of the area of certain shapes to calculate the area of composite figures.
Honors
Students will start our Geometry unit by exploring the the Triangle Sum Theorem and Triangle Inequality Theorem. Students will also determine the complementary and supplementary angles. Using their knowledge of these types of angles, they will solve for missing values.
Extensions/Extra Credit:
Delta Math Extensions!!!!
Students have access to their assigned extension lessons. Students will now work on these extension activities if they have time in class after their current lessons.
I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period. This was due last friday. I will post more lessons when we come back from the break.
Homework
Homework is usually given out Monday and it's due Friday. If there is a short week, I will adjust the deadline.

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
Next week the class is discussing Mixtures (Homogenous and Heterogenous) and Pure substances. Students should know now what an element, molecule, and compound is.
All students are writing an article about their chosen molecule. A rubric is posted in Google classroom. Although they will have time in class to complete it, they are more than welcome to finish it at home. They were introduced to the project on January 30.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
Journals are the best way for a student to study for quizzes and tests, which they will have ample time to do in-class.
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 02/07/2025
This week we hope to complete our unit over Population and Migration. We will do a quick case study of Africa. Then, we will finish up with our study of graphs and charts. We have a unit test scheduled for Friday, Feb. the 7th.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Group A Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Week 23:
Can you believe the month of January has raced past us and now we find ourselves on the first week of February. Four month to go!
We have begun our final video production project in this unit and your students will have an option to pick one of three scenarios to pick from. We have introduced some broadcast journalism and a little bit of television production to help for those who choose the third project.
We will continue to revisit our typing skills and learning how to stay on the home row without looking at the keyboard. Future assessments will also come soon as we move forward during this third grading period. The Spring semester goes quickly, so let's all stay on top of keeping up with our assignments and projects. Let's have a great week!
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time or possibly after school in Room 2414. Please make arrangements ahead of time with me and your POD teacher.

The second program we will be using for 3D models is Blender, open-source software that has been developed over the years by some VERY talented people so that everyone has access to Hollywood-level animation tools... for free. We will just be scratching the surface by bringing in our Sketchup model and rendering images and simple videos of our houses sporting rather realistic shadows and reflections. Blender is the most complex piece of software we'll be working with this year, but a simple search on YouTube will quickly give anyone a good idea of why a number of students continue developing their skills well after their 6th grade year is a distant memory. We will concentrate on simple lighting and keyframing of a 360° spin of our model to post on our portfolios before we return to Sketchup to sculpt something a bit more interesting than a simple house.
