This Thursday, January 23rd, each student will dress up as the person about whom they have read a book and present for three-to-five minutes, including questions. Instructions for this project (as well as the alternative version of it) can be found on Google Classroom.
To fulfil this assignment, students need to have read an actual published book about their person, not just Google searches or Wikipedia entries.
Students will be allowed to wear their outfit all day if they wish, as long as it meets NEISD dress standards. Students can also bring props and costumes that they can just throw on over the regular clothes for the presentation.
We will also be beginning a unit on rhetoric and persuasive writing this week, starting with impromptu speaking.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
HAM
Students will practice and review Transformations and then have a CFA at the end of the week.
Honors
Students will write inequalities from word problems and solve them. They will then extend their knowledge on how to solve equations and inequalities and learn how to solve two step equations and inequalities.
Students will end the week with a CFA over one step equations and inequalities.
Extensions/Extra Credit:
Delta Math Extensions!!!!
Students have access to their assigned extension lessons. Students will now work on these extension activities if they have time in class after their current lessons.
I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period. This was due last friday. I will post more lessons when we come back from the break.
Homework
Homework is usually given out Monday and it's due Friday. If there is a short week, I will adjust the deadline.
HAM: Transformations HW
Honors: Problem Solving HW

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
Next week we will be going over properties of matter, specifically density, homogenous mixtures, heterogenous mixtures, and pure substances. We are building our way towards chemistry!
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
Journals are the best way for a student to study for quizzes and tests, which they will have ample time to do in-class.
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 1/24/2025
NO Monday after school tutorial this week. Students will still be able to attend morning tutorials.
We have started our next unit over Population and Migration. Our first focus is on investigating where people live in the world in relation to specific geographic factors/features (rivers, mountains, oceans). Then we will move on to reasons why people move from place to place.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Group C Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Due to cancellation we will start up the new semester with Group A & B helping to do a clean-up on Thursday, the 16th after school.
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Week 21:
We continue are trek with Adobe Premiere Pro and learning how to use audio/video editing software to create digital artifacts. This unit is still showcasing our 6th graders talents. I will say it and continue to say it - our 6th graders are very bright and creative when it comes to using technology and just being very creative with their assignments and projects.
We will also look this week at our typing skills. Remember the importance of learning a new skill. Most are picking up quickly how being on the "home row" on the keyboard helps us learn a new technique which will follow us through our educational quest. They will appreciate it more as they continue through middle school and on to high school. Let's have a great week!
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time in Room 2414. Please make arrangements ahead of time with me and your POD teacher.
~Mr. Garcia
Last week we got the hang of navigating in 3D space using a mouse and keyboard, as well as how to enter precise measurements in constructing models. The ability to be absolutely exact with our dimensions is what makes Sketchup truly useful.
This week we begin construction of a "Simple House". The minimum requirements are very straightforward but again, precision is key and measurements will be taken as their houses are graded. One of the most important concepts they are learning (besides how important keyboard shortcuts are!) is the use of "components", grouped objects that, when copied, can then all be modified at the same time. Our four-paned windows have 29 individual faces and each of 6 walls must have a window, so students who do NOT use components would end up spending an enormous amount of time trying to paint all of those surfaces!
