Having established our routines and procedures, we will be getting into real academics this week. We will be introducing root words, setting up our interactive notebooks, and beginning our first unit of inquiry. We will also be doing some activities relating to our summer reading book, Hatchet, by Gary Paulson, including a chance to make some sparks with flint, as Brian does in the book.
Starting this week, DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week. It is especially important that students have a book to read when they finish their MAP testing next week.
We will be visiting our school library as a class soon, and then about every 3 weeks thereafter. If you are willing to get your student a library card from the San Antonio Public Library, we will help them get it connected to their NEISD Sora account. I sent some applications home with students who were interested. Here, also, is the link: https://sapl.sat.lib.tx.us/selfreg

We will start exploring how to calculate squares and square roots. We will estimate square roots without a calculator using perfect squares. We will end the week determining the scientific notation of numbers.
Honors
We will start out unit with learning how we categorize rational numbers in the real number system. We will end the week exploring how integers are on a number line and can show us the absolute value and opposite numbers.
Extensions:
When students are done with their current work, they will access their extension work on Google Classroom. The program is called Delta Math. There will be assignments for each skill or lesson we do in class. The students are not expected to complete them at home. Your student is more then welcome to complete it if they need more practice though. I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period.

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
This week we carry on our understanding of units of measurement. We will also dive deeper into making connections with data and using them to make scientific reasoning.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures this week!
Journals are a very important to maintain and write notes in. At the end of every week I will be checking the journals and counting them towards the student's daily grade.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 8/23/2024
Happy 2nd Week of School!!! This week we will be exploring academic reading strategies as we learn about people who work in the fields of Social Studies. We will be working on our highlighting and annotation skills as well as identifying and extracting evidence from our reading. We will then use what we have learned to identify solutions for real world problems.
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Here we go, 6th grade! We are going to dive in to the world of being a Digital Citizen. We will discuss and see how one behaves responsibly online by considering the values, principles, and standards of good conduct. We will also begin to measure our typing and keyboarding skills as we begin week 2. Technology is always changing. So we have to be ready to adapt it to our own world. Let's go, Eagles!!!

We've been taking extra time to make sure everyone has the classroom procedures down, including how to use our 2nd monitor to keep Google Classroom assignments and datatech.studio instructions quickly and easily available. We'll also be writing our outline of the 3 categories of things each one of us has favorites of in the Word document we saved in our project folder and taking a snip of that folder to turn in - every Google Classroom assignment will have a file to turn in from our computer. We'll also go over the methods we will use to locate, save and document the images we'll be using in our video. Since we are making a very high resolution video, not just any picture will do!
