We have now started our biography unit. Each 6th grader should have chosen and be reading a book about a real person of their choice, living or dead. These can include biographer-written biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. We went to the school library to check out biographies before the break, but, if your student didn't find something on the person they want to read about there, there are lots of other ways to find books. They could also settle for their second or third choice if their first is not working out. Parents, any and all help you could give your student with this will be much appreciated.
Students should have access to their book or ebook at school, as we will be having certain SSR days dedicated to biographies only.
To end this unit on January 22nd, each student will dress up as the person about whom they have read and present for three minutes, including questions.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
We continue to march on towards the end of the Energy and Forces unit. Specifically, we will be going over the types of forces (contact, non-contact, and the subtopics in them.
There will be a lot of summative work over the next 2 weeks, so please make sure your children have their work turned in and that they come into tutoring if they need help.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
Journals are the best way for a student to study for quizzes and tests, which they will have ample time to do in-class.
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.

Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.

Week 17:
Two weeks left and we are on the home stretch to finish our first semester!
We will continue and finish our assignments with Google Workspace and start reviewing for our semester assessment which is scheduled the last week before our winter break (Dec. 16-20). Always check your Google Classroom for your assignments and stay up to date with all of your deadlines.
We will find a spot to save for our typing skills and pick up where we left off as we begin the Spring semester. We are all getting better. Please practice on your own when you can. Typing.com is available even during the break.
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time in Room 2414. Please make arrangements with me and your POD teacher.
Happy Holidays, everyone!!
~Mr. Garcia
This final week of the semester is filled with keyframes as we use After Effects to spin, wiggle, shrink, change colors and so much more in order to animate of our "vectorized" vocabulary monsters. Adobe Bridge will make it much simpler for students to browse the many presets that can be applied to entire compositions and/or individual parts of drawings that our students have been working so hard on.
Keyframing is not new to them, having used the technique in Adobe Premiere to make their My Favorite Things video, but there is now a whole new world of values that can be changed over time. By the end of the week students should have used Media Encoder to generate an HD video and an animated GIF, both of which they will be adding to their Vector Art portfolio.
