This is a big week in ELAR. We will solve the Hatchet Escape Room Adventure on Monday and Tuesday, November 18th and 19th.
We will also kick off our biography unit this week. Each 6th grader will read a book about a real person of their choice, living or dead, then find a book about that person. These can include biographer-written biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. We will be going to the school library to check out biographies on Wednesday, November 20th, but, if you student can't find something on the person they want to read about there, we know there are lots of other ways to find books. Parents, any help you could give with this will be much appreciated.
At the end of this unit in January, each student will dress up as the person about whom they have read and present for three minutes, including questions.
Homework for ELAR is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.
I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are pencil and paper assignments. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.
Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-60 of these minutes will happen in class each week, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30 minute (or more) chunks.
The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net
HAM
Monday and Tuesday students will start their Unit 4 study guide.
Wednesday students will take the district test for Unit 4 (slope). They can use their notes.
Thursday students will take the Unit 4 CFA over Bivariate Data. They can use their study guide while taking the CFA.
Friday will be retakes of the CFA or Unit 4 test in class if they did not pass it the first time.
Honors
Monday and Tuesday students will work on their study guide for the unit 3 test.
Wednesday and Thursday students will take their unit 3 exam and retake it the next day if they fail it the first time.
Friday is a work day to catch up before we leave for the break.
Extensions/Extra Credit:
Starting this week, Delta Math Extensions will not have access to videos for the questions I assign. There will be some other features students will lose access to as the free version is very limit. However, I will still be using it as a option for extension practice.
I will use their progress to help boost their grades at the end of the grading period.
Delta Math has been suspended until November 22nd. Students will not have the ability to access their Delta Math classroom until November 22nd.
Homework
Homework is usually given out Monday and it's due Friday. If there is a short week, I will adjust the deadline.
HAM: Slope Intercept Form HW
Honors: Percent Proportion HW

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE SCIENCE!
Hello!
We are continuing into the FORCES section of this unit. We will be going over normal forces, gravity, friction, magnetism, and the appropriate vocabulary for these topics.
We are going to maintain our routines and procedures!
Journals are the best way for a student to study for quizzes and tests, which they will have ample time to do in-class.
If a student was absent and has a missing grade, there is a file basket in my room with the week's notes and activities. If they fill in what they missed, I will upload it to the gradebook.
I have Tutoring on Monday and Wednesday morning, from 7:45am - 8:15am, as well as lunch tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Comic book club will meet on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30, if your student has not given you a permission slip to sign, they may not participate until that is done. Similarly, they need to be passing all courses to be able to attend.
Remember: You can reach me via email ( jkelly3@neisd.net ) if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Week Ending 11/22/2024
PLEASE CHECK YOUR STUDENT'S GOOGLE CLASSROOM for SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES! Students should be able to earn at least the 5 required by Winter/Christmas Break!!!!:)
This week we will continue to explore various religions and belief systems as we continue our study of culture throughout the world. We will be having a map test over the Midwest States of America on Dec. 6th. Please have your student share the Seterra link with you!
Tutorial times: Students who are in need of finishing up or have a quick question about an assignment can come in Mon - Fri during homeroom PODS (7:45-8:15 am). They will need to check in with their homeroom teacher first before coming to my room.
For students needing more guidance or remediation, I am available Mondays after school from 3:40-4:30 pm by appointment.
Group A Chicken Tenders meet this week!
Chicken/Garden Club Thurs. 3:40-4:30 pm. Club will be cancelled on Thursdays that we have early dismissal or bad weather(rain).
Service Hours - due March 31, 2025. 6th graders need to earn 5 hours before that time. Students will need to log their hours in Skyward. Skyward is a great online tool to track hours so that family sees totals from home too.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Week 15:
Fall is in the air and this is our last full week before our Thanksgiving break! Let's go!!
We will continue our look at our Google Apps and continue this unit with some more seasonal and holiday themed activities and projects.
Remember, always check your Google Classroom for assignments and other updates as we go through this month and next towards the end of our first semester.
More Typing.com to continue our keyboarding skills and make them even better as the school year progresses. Please get used to working off your home row keys and using it more often as your typing skills will be challenged to make you a stronger student with this skill.
Tutoring appointments can be made ahead of time if you need the extra help. Just plan to meet any morning during POD time in Room 2414. Please make arrangements with me and your POD teacher.
See you all on Monday!

Now that students have a handle on Illustrator's basic tools, we are going to take the "monster" sketch they made for Mr. Wayment in ELAR and re-create it as a vector drawing. The sketches have been scanned by Mr. Wayment and are now provided to the students. They'll place them on an Illustrator artboard and trace their own work, keeping in mind which parts should be on individual layers so they can be animated in the next stage. These are creatures that have been named based on the number of teeth, heads, legs, eyes, tentacles, etc. Some are cute, some are scary, but all of them are unique and imaginative creations!
