What makes Seventeen unique?
While most K-pop groups are not heavily involved with the music making process, Seventeen is and they make their music from scratch with many members participating in writing lyrics. Not only do they produce their own songs, but they have also choreographed many of their songs as well, demonstrating the passion and hard work they put into their careers.
Who is Seventeen?
Seventeen is a K-pop boy group who is well known internationally and within South Korea. Even though they are a K-pop group, they do have 4 international members. That includes Jun and The8 who are Chinese, plus Vernon and Joshua who were born in America. Seventeen is under Pledis Entertainment, which is now under Hybe Labels, and debuted on May 26, 2015. Their debut mini album was “17 Carat”, and the title song was “Adore U”. According to K-Profiles, “SEVENTEEN (세븐틴) is a self-produced Kpop boy group that consists of 13 members: S.coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, Vernon (the hip-hop unit); Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, Seungkwan (the vocal unit); Hoshi, Jun, The8, Dino (the performance unit).” The provided information has been confirmed by Woozi, their main producer and member of Seventeen, and he has credits to almost every single song they have released to their fans. Another interesting thing is that all of the members of Seventeen are extremely close as they have known each other for over 10 years. In many of their videos they mention how they have a brother-like bond and would like to stay close as they get older.
Seventeen, not 13
One of the most common misconceptions about Seventeen is that they have 17 members because of their group name, Seventeen, but that is not the case as they only have 13. “A Beginner’s guide to Seventeen” by The Asian project provides the reasoning behind their group name, “The group’s name is the sum of 13 members that are made up of three teams who perform as one group (13 + 3 + 1 = 17).” The three teams being the Vocal, Hip-Hop, and Performance units.
What Seventeen is known for
“a guide to seventeen!” by TeenTannie says, “SVT are insane performers that have come to be known for their complicated, skillful, and highly synchronized choreography.” This is what hooks many new fans such as myself. Another major thing Seventeen are known for is their sense of humor. They have a variety show on YouTube called “Going Seventeen”, that has hundreds of episodes and they all have different concepts. This is a very popular series among fans as many of their episodes have millions of views. Their show started in 2017 and is still currently ongoing.
Carats
The official fandom name for Seventeen is Carats. Carats as in diamonds, not the vegetable. This decision was based on their pre-debut song “Shining diamond”. The official colors for Carats are rose quartz and serenity. Seventeen has helped make their light-stick called a Carat Bong that is made to be used during concerts. It shines many different colors and was also made with the purpose to be so bright it could help people get home safely after concerts.
Most Popular Hits
Some of their most popular songs include “Hot”, “Super”, “Don’t wanna cry”, “God of Music”, and “Fighting” released by BooSeokSoon, a three member unit within the group, consisting of Hoshi, Seungkwan, and DK. Another one of the mini units within Seventeen is the Leaders unit. The Leaders unit contains S.coups, the official leader and leader of the hip-hop unit, Hoshi, the performance unit leader, and Woozi, the leader of the vocal unit. Many members of Seventeen have their own solo songs, the members include Jun, Hoshi, Woozi, The8, Vernon, and Dino.
Awards
Recently they made history by having the most pre-ordered K-pop album with 5.2 million sales in total and 5 million sales in the first week of pre-release on their album, Seventeenth Heaven. They won three rookie awards in their debut year and now currently have six Bonsang, main prizes, and six Daesang, grand prizes all from different year-end award shows. At the MAMA Awards Seventeen has won the best dance performance in 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2023. Currently Seventeen has 14.4 million followers on their group Instagram, not including the members' individual accounts. They have 11.3 million followers on TikTok and 10.9 million subscribers on their YouTube platform.
Why are Seventeen so Loved?
There are many reasons as to why so many people, including idols, love and admire Seventeen. They put in an immense amount of dedication and passion into what they do and you can tell they love their job. The views and awards they have won come together and show why they are so loved by many different communities.
