The Lincou’s trip to America was very last minute. “We did everything in three months. We made the decision in May… and we moved at the end of August,” said Jade’s mother, Celine. They spent hours emptying out the apartment, trying to figure out what to bring and what not to bring, and dealing with their Visas. “It was rough trying to finalize and pack up everything and make that transition,” said Jade.
A Lawyer in America was asking them for paperwork which had to be done at the embassy of the United States in Paris. Since they lived in Marseille at the time, it was difficult for them to go to Paris multiple times in order to finalize everything. Jade’s younger sister, Paola, did not realize the big shift as much as she did. Paola was not even five years old, as opposed to Jade who was nine at the time, and realized the significance of leaving her friends and family and the life that she knew. Life before the move was extremely hectic and nerve wrecking. None of them knew what life would be like in America. “Everybody was telling us that it would be like Disney World. It would be big and amazing,” said Celine. When they finally got on the plane to the United States, they had twelve pieces of luggage. They used all of their reward program points in order to fly business class so that they could have three pieces of luggage each and maximise what they could bring with them.
