In 1968, there was a military coup in Peru that claimed they were going to have a “agrarian reform and take all private land”. In response to being afraid of their land being taken and less opportunities being present, Elena’s parents thought it would be best to move their family to the United States. One major reason why America stood out to them was because of family ties. At the time, there were parts of the Choy family in San Francisco as well as Boston. When deciding which coast to move to, Elena’s mom “thought it was better to move where there was less family”. This was due to the fact that they wanted a fresh start and wanted to avoid big family drama. Because they had more family in California, they decided Boston was the way to go.
