We will continue to focus on reading comprehension of what your child has read. When working with Take Home Readers at home, please encourage your child talk about what happened FIRST, NEXT, THEN NEXT...AND LAST in the story (reading comprehension). Students will compare and contrast stories read (does this story remind you of another story? why? How was this story the same/different from another story you read?) Also, let your child tell his/her favorite part of the story using complete sentences. You have been given access to the Amira learning app. If you still need help in signing on to access this, let me know!
Please use flash cards at home to review new sight words listed on week 4 of your child's homework calendar and review all other sight words: no, so, when, where, mother, father, too, something, many, over, under, saw, nine, ten, than, them, then, work, works, were, eight, put, puts, five, gives, of, gray, zero, two, three, four, five, six, seven, ask, asks, find, from, that, they, this, there, red, blue, goes, into, why, off, let's, one, say, look, my, our, your, her, his, says, away, do, was, will, as, has, want, come, said, to, with, big, little, in, go, it, see, me, at, an, the, I, you, am, can, she, he, we, be, and, are, like, likes, up, but, us, not, on, down. By the end of the year, students will need to read 50+ sight words. S/he will also be independently writing these words in sentences.
We will be working daily on sounding out and reading/writing CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant words) and listening for beginning, middle and ending sounds. The End of Year Amira assessment will be coming up in April, and we will be practicing to read words quickly and fluently. We will continue to learn about consonant blends (2 letters that are blended together to make 1 sound AND both sounds are heard. EX: bl- blocks, tr- triangle, etc.).
S/he will also be sounding out nonsense words. When your child begins to decode multisyllabic words, some of these syllables may look like an unknown word part, like a nonsense word, such as "guz", or "blad". This research-based strategy ensures that your child is truly decoding, or connecting sounds to letters. As a result, this skill builds phonics accuracy and confidence with reading unfamiliar words. And, it's fun to sound out these silly, crazy words!
Writing- independently writing 3+ sentences in journals using sight words we know using correct writing conventions (finger spacing between words, capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, correct punctuation), writing all capital and lower case letters independently. Throughout the 5th grading period, we will be focusing on sight words; students should be able to read 40+ sight words by the end of the grading period.
Math- Addition and subtraction, number bonds (2 numbers), counting to 100+ by 1's and 10's, plane (flat/2D) and solid (3D) shapes-cylinder, cone, cube, sphere

At Home:
By now, students have been learning about a number of sight words! Students will need to read 50+ sight words by the end of this grading period. Please make flash cards for these words and add to his/her sight word collection each week. They will be using these words when writing 3+ sentences, so please help him/her review at home. Together, we will make sure that your child is "First Grade Ready"!
Students have been given Take Home Reading Book packets. Please practice reading skills with your child, fill out the enclosed paper AND return books, paper and packet each Friday.
Read with your child at home! Story Time is an excellent way to learn new vocabulary and story elements (characters, setting, plot, story sequence, etc.)!
Let your child count as high as s/he can!
A fun way to practice writing can be by using...SHAVING CREAM! Spray some shaving cream in a tray or plate. Then have your kinder kid create shapes, numerals, letters OR names! And it smells great, too! Making letters with Play Doh is cool too. Enjoy!

Enjoy!

We need your help
Please Please Please speak with your child at home about following rules, policies and procedures of the classroom/School.
We had a great first week and next week will be more intense with instruction. We went over classroom expectations, rules and procedures. We ask that you speak with your child about following directions and listening to the teachers. We will be making phone calls if necessary.
Transition
We wanted to give you a better understanding or for you to have some idea of what each day will look like. A few adjustments have been made on B-Days. When we switch, students will go to their homeroom and eat breakfast as normal. After breakfast we will transition to our classes. We will transition after down time and have a snack with the homeroom teacher and be dismissed with our Homeroom teacher.
Students will keep backpacks in the homeroom since they are coming and returning daily. Students will take their lunch boxes. We will keep changing clothes in classrooms. Please put names on all belongings. We will take things out and store them for later when needed. Scissors will be kept at school (if you have two pairs of scissors we will have one for each class). Headphones are placed in the basket with the student's name and our instructional assistant takes them to and from classes.
We will not have snacks on Fridays due to early lunch. No towels and blankets are needed, we will not have naps. No show and share on Fridays as of yet.
Please call the front office for transportation changes. Sometimes information is given to Instructional assistants in the mornings, with so many things going on we ask that you please call the front office when changes are needed. Place all notes inside the folder, sometimes we may misplace them. We are not perfect, this will better help us be more efficient. Any questions or concerns please feel free to Dojo us.
Dress down Friday’s are $2 and money is to be placed in an envelope with students name inside students folder. Please do not send money in with a student or other places in their backpack.
