What do ya do when the preacher man
chokes ta' death right there at yer own kitchen table?
Synopsis:
The Abercrombie family is in a miserable state. As much chicken as the preacher has put down in his lifetime, nobody is going to believe he died that way! So, what else is there to do but frame yer' neighbor fer doin' the good preacher in? Poor preacher man does a lot of travelin' round the town of Troublesome Creek in the next few days - fer a dead feller!
Here's a just sample of the script:
Scene 1
N 1: A while back, down in these parts there was this preacher man who was plumb crazy about fried chicken. Now all preachers like chicken a’course, but folks say Old Dry Frye was the chicken-eatingest sermonizer that ever laid fire to a pulpit.
N 2: So if you was having fried chicken for Sunday dinner, you might as well set out an extra plate, cause here would come Old Dry Frye with his nose a-twitchin' and his false teeth a-flappin'. You could just count on it.
N 3: One time over on Troublesome Creek, or thereabouts, Old Dry Frye was making his Sunday rounds. He stopped off at the Abercrombie's farm house...
N 2: It was Fitch's place.
N 3: Weren't neither. It was Abercrombie's! Was Maisie Abercrombie told me herself. So like I was tellin', Old Dry Frye stopped off at the Abercrombie's farm house and his timing couldn't have been better. The folks there had just scooted up their chairs to the dinner table.
N 1: Everybody knew Old Dry Frye, so when he knocked on the door, [pause as Frye knocks on door] Mrs. Abercrombie says,
Mrs. A: [Opens door] Howdy, preacher. Would you care for a bite?
Frye: Why, thank you Mrs. Abercrombie. I's just in the neighborhood checkin' on the flock. Didn't even know it was near suppertime. But since yer offerin', s'pose it wouldn't be polite to decline yer kind invitation.
N 2: Sad to say, them was Old Dry Frye's last words. Old Dry Frye set his self down to the table and started in on that plate a' chicken.
Maisie A: [To Gracie in a stage whisper.] Preacher Frye's gobblin' fried chicken like there ain't no more ta be had in the county.
Gracie A: [Back to Maisie] He started wolfin' it down before we could even say grace!
N 1: He snarfed that chicken so fast he choked on a bone and died right there on the spot.
