Reading Comprehension!
Questioning: I ask questions before, during and after reading. What are you wondering? Why are you wondering that? What in the text made you wonder that?
Visualizing: I paint a picture in my mind of what the author is trying to tell me or describe to me.
Rereading: I go back to the beginning of a word, line, sentence, or pages and read the words again. I do this to check that things still make sense.
Metacognition: Thinking about your thinking.
Clarifying: When I get stuck on a part I don't understand, I go back and reread to see if it is a work I don't know or idea that is new. I reread slowly, read on or ask for help.
Predicting: I will make predictions about a text based on the illustrations, headings, bold print and from the actual text.
Self-Correcting: After I stop when I get to a tricky part, a part I don't know, or a part that doesn't make sense, then I fix my mistake.
Self-Monitoring: I stop when I get to a tricky part, a part I don't know, or a part that doesn't make sense.
Cross-Checking: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?
Word Solving Actions: On small words, I say the word slowly to hear the sounds. What part of the word do you know? Is there an ending? Does this work look like a word you know? Say the first part, then the last part, then reread and think about what would make sense.
Searching For Clues: I use clues to help me when I get to words I don't know. I look at the first part of the word, the last part of the word, the length of the word, and the meaning of the word.
Inferences: I use picture clues, story clues, and my own knowledge to figure out information the author doesn't tell me.
Making Connections: I will make text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections before, during, and after reading.
Summarizing: I can pull out the most important parts of the text, such as characters, setting, problem, resolution, cause and effect, and put them in order.Â
