The Nebraska Youth Health Equity Project is a partnership between Nebraska Extension, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and Nebraska FCCLA.The purpose of this project is to foster youth leadership development and community engagement while addressing a health issue in rural Nebraska. The Nebraska Youth Health Equity Project will utilize a team of youth ages 12-19 (grades 7 - 12) in collaboration with an adult coach. Teams will consist of a minimum of 3-8 youth and 1 adult coach to 1) engage in learning about health equity; 2) determine local health equity needs; 3) seek to address the local health equity need; 4) communicate results of the youth-driven project in a spring 2024 showcase. Any 12-19 year old youth in Nebraska are able to participate.
Using their COVID-19 experiences as a focus point, youth will explore health issues and social determinants of health in their community. They will also communicate and/or collaborate with public health officials and stakeholders about key health issues and present their research findings.
Volunteer coaches will be paid a stipend of $2,300. Teams will also have a base rate of $3,000 to spend on supplies, production, marketing, travel, etc. This amount has the potential to increase based on the amount of teams participating as well as the size of the team. Funding for this project has come from the Center for Disease Control.
