How Parents Can Help!

PRACTICE: Students and parents must recognize the importance of practicing the instrument. Students are most successful when they practice daily in a place in their home set aside specifically for practicing. Parents can encourage their child and even learn beside them!
PRAISE: Celebrate the success your child has. Every little improvement is worthy of some special attention. Reward your child for even the smallest growth.
SUPPORT THE ENSEMBLE: Be ready to help as a chaperone, assist with group needs, provide your talents (photography, sewing, etc) to the group.

What not to do: • Don't use practice as punishment. • Don't insist that your child play for others when he or she doesn't want to. • Don't ridicule or make fun of mistakes or less than perfect playing. • Don't apologize to others for your child's weak performance. • Don't start your child on an instrument that's in poor working condition. • Don't expect rapid progress and development in the beginning.
