About the Bands

Hayward Elementary Pioneer Band

The Hayward Elementary Pioneer band begins typically during the second semester of fifth grade. However, in the 2017-2018 year we were able to begin with instrument testing right away in August and began band in Mid-September. This beginning band focuses on basic skills in group lessons, but does perform at Bandfest at the end of the year.

Nebraska City Middle School Bands

We primarily function as three Concert Bands (6th, 7th, and 8th grades) in our day-to-day learning and performing. However, all of the 7th and 8th grade students will perform as a Marching Band for most of the 1st Quarter and once in the spring. The general efforts of the work we will do can be categorized into our three main objectives.

Objective 1: To develop the fundamental musicianship skills which can enhance both the internal and external self.

Objective 2: To develop a recognition of the value of identity through a team or group, including valuing the whole as a cumulative sum of individuals.

Objective 3: To enhance the spirit of exploration, innovation, and determination through a true Pioneer Attitude.

Extra Opportunities

A number of extra non-graded opportunities exist for members of the 7th and 8th grade bands at NCMS. These may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Honor Bands (Blair, IWCC, 8th Grade All-State, etc.)
  • Solo and Ensemble work (Both for fun and for spring contests)
  • Music Clubs (After school music groups by interest)

Student Responsibilities

Students must improve themselves on their part in order to improve the group as a whole:

  1. Students must practice frequently. A minimum of 90 minutes per week is typically expected.
  2. Students must be in attendance. A missing part will have to be filled by someone else, sometimes the group cannot wait.
  3. Students must set their expectations of themselves and others high.
  4. Students must be relentless in the pursuit of excellence. Excellence is a habit, not an event.
