NEAR is a scalable, cheap, super fast, and eco-friendly certified carbon neutral blockchain with an easy to use website and documentation for developers.
What's great about NEAR is that it's very accessible for beginners. For example, usually crypto wallets have something like this as a public key 0x9249248928GSDG43D092834028.
In NEAR however you can use an actual username like yourusername.near
To start we will create a testnet account. A testnet account is a crypto wallet that lives on a test blockchain and uses fake coins.
Testnet accounts account are great for getting used to the environment and experimenting without the risk of spending any actual money or getting scammed.
A mainnet account lives on the actual blockchain where real money is being used in transactions.
1 -
First, go to https://wallet.near.org/ to create an account.
Click Create Account to start the wallet creation process.
If you are new and want to experiment with the wallet, feel free to visit the Testnet Version https://wallet.testnet.near.org/
2 -
Security Method
This page has several options for choosing a security method to store the password to your account.
We recommend Secure Passphrase to start. This will give you 12 words that act like the password to your account.
Ledger Hardware Wallet is a device similar to a USB that stores your password for you and is the most secure option, however you need to buy the device to start.
3 -
Secure your Seed Phrase
The seed phrase is the password or private key to your account. If you lose access to this you lose access to your account and money.
Write these words down somewhere safe!
4 -
Verify Seed Phrase
You will be asked to verify a word in your seed phrase for security purposes. Please input the corresponding word from your seed phrase into the option.
Congratulations your wallet has been created!
5 -
Fund your Wallet
To fully activate your wallet and reserve your “username.near”, you must top it up with more than 0.16 $NEAR,
In NEAR, blockchain memory space costs money, and saving a username into the blockchain will cost some NEAR.
Proceed by clicking the “Top Up” button.
You can fund it with credit or debit card via UTORG or MoonPay. You can also send the money from another wallet or crypto exchange to the wallet address listed below.
6 -
Reserve your Account ID
Your account ID is like your username. People can send money and assets to your account through your ID.
After funding your account, proceed by clicking “Add a Custom Address”
Pick a name you like that's not reserved (it will tell you if it's taken)!
CONGRATULATIONS!🎉
You've made your first ever crypto wallet! You should see the main dashboard with some funds in your account. Each NEAR coin is worth a certain amount of US Dollars. To see the current price of NEAR you can look at CoinMarketCap.
Once you decide to transfer funds to an external wallet or exchange, make sure the token you are sending via a specific network is supported by this exchange to avoid loss of funds. For example, most exchanges only support native NEAR coins, but any transaction of USDC via the NEAR network will not arrive at an exchange and funds will be lost.
When funds are sent, you can find the transaction in your dashboard. Please click your transaction.
Once you found your transaction on explorer, and it says that the transaction reached the destination, please contact the destination wallet/exchange support team.
Always double-check the network you are about to send your tokens to and keep your funds safe!
The .near address is your address for everything, including withdrawing funds from exchanges. There is no other address. Check your ID on the wallet page.
Navigate to https://explorer.near.org/ in your browser to see information on specific blocks and transactions on the NEAR MainNet.
Currently, we don’t have any applications, but https://wallet.near.org/ is optimized for use in both mobile and desktop browsers.
Staking NEAR
Click "Stake my tokens"
Choose your validator. There are many considerations to choosing a validator, some of which include the cost of delegation (a percentage of your rewards), the reliability of the validator (check https://near-staking.com to learn more), and the current total stake size.
Click "Stake With Validator"
Enter the amount to stake
Click "Submit Stake" and authorize the transactions. You may need to authorize several transactions if you are staking from a lockup.
UnStaking NEAR
Note: Unstaking will take up to 72 hours, and your NEAR will be completely locked during this time. Unstaking again before your NEAR has finished unstaking will reset the clock.
Scroll down and find the validator you would like to unstake from in "Current Validators".
Click the validator's name
Click the "Unstake" button
Enter the amount to unstake
Click "Unstake Tokens" and authorize the transactions.

NEAR Wallet is non-custodial thus NEAR Team has no control over wallets and tokens on the blockchain.
If your tokens were sent to a wallet that is not yours(you don’t know the private key of this wallet) - we cannot restore them.
An epoch is the interval of time that consists of several consensus rounds. Note that there is no guarantee of the exact number of consensus rounds. Currently, one epoch lasts for about the duration of half a day(~10-14 hours).
